How to make a wave file smaller?

Hi again,

Well, Ive managed to get a few tracks recorded from my 4-track onto my computer (by using the computers basic wave recorder - cheap skate I know!!). My problem now is that, although I burned the stuff onto cd no problem, I want to upload onto a website. The wave files however are massive, loads of Mb's. How do I reduce the size of these files without compromising quality? Is there a software package (free hopefully ) that I could download?

Another wee question if I may, my wave files do have some hiss. Can I reduce this in any way or will I have to save a few pounds and stop using the Windows Sound recorder?

Hey there, as far as reducing the size, you will need to compress the files to an MP3 or WM file. You can download some free players that will also let you convert files this way. Musicmatch Jukebox does this, and you should be able to do it in Windows Media player. You might also look at a program for recording and editing waves. There are some that have a free demo that will let you save your work. Adobe Audition is available with a free 30 day demo, and you might be able to clean up the sound, and save it as a smaller file. Just remember a smaller file may not sound as good, so always save a copy of the original.

hey there, wav files are huge. there isn't really a way to shrink them unless you convert it to another file format like mp3, but mp3 is lower quality than wav. there are some files formats that im aware of that like "ape" that dont result in loss of quality, but i dont know what player supports that format. either way, it's gonna take up a lot of space

you should probably save up for adobe audition, it has some good noise and hiss reducing functions included in it
