I am still a reletive "Newbie". I am getting the hang of things but I still really want to learn more about compression, EQ, and just overall mixing. I think books are generally good but it is hard for me when I cannot hear whats going on. I heard of a cd-rom that came out that looked good (please tell me where to find it if you know what I am talking about). I have scoured the internet and have learned a lot and still have many more resources on here, but I like to also have tsomething to take with me on trips and what not (hence my liking of books.) I have scheduled days this summer to go to some studios and just sit in and learn, but that is very minimal.

My request is a list of all the favorite books, sites, and or other ideas on how you learned what you have learned and how I can become better. I also subscribe to 3 magazines, which I also really enjoy. Thanks in advance.

for newbies, i suggest "The Art of Mixing" by David Gibson and bookmark this website: www.studiocovers.com and feel free to ask all the questions your heart desires on this BBS.....those 3 things should keep you busy for awhile.......

That one slipped by me.....you may be surprised how valuable that will be....the more of this you can do, the better.....

I haven't heard it, but I think that I'm going to bite the bullet and buy this, just to check it out:

It's like an e-book on CD-ROM, with audio examples of what they're talking about. It's a great idea, I just don't know how well they pulled it off. But it's run out of my girlfriend's home town, so I figure that I'll give 'em a shout out, and check it out.

Ya thats the cd I was talking about, thanks. By the way nice rhyme :) All these suggestions have been great. i just got on with a studio so I will be able to learn a lot. Some of my weak points are with hardware (mixers, patch bays, external effects etc.) and this is the perfect place to learn. I will actually get to work with real bands doing producing and engineering. I am actually starting to get an ear for compressors. I couldn't tell the difference between them before, now it is starting to make more sense. Thanks everyone. Keep the ideas coming if you can.

Check out all the studios in your area and see if any of them have a school in them, I took two years at Omega Schools in Rockville and there's just no substitue for hands on in a real recording studio. It costs a lot but it is so worth it.

I have just been teaching myself by trial and error and coming here for feedback. This BBS is invaluable.
