How to get this reverse sound? (link)

Hey guys,

I was listening to this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ps-F2jp3y4E (huge madlib fan) and i was wondering how you get that reverse sound on her voice.

What in the world is that? its like a reverb/delay that hits before the actual voice is played.

any ideas?

In a nutshell:

Record the vocal and duplicate it on a second track.

Reverse the copy of the vocal so it plays backwards.

Add reverb to the backwards vocal and print the 'verb to a track. Ditch the reversed vocal track that you sent into the reverb.

Reverse the track with the printed 'verb.

Since the reverb was triggered from a backwards voice, the reverb will sound "forwards" once you reverse it. But since the reverb is in fact reversed, it fades in before the voice instead of fading out after it.

love that effect!

Don't want to de-rail, but I've heard something similar and always wondered about it in a couple of songs (although it sounds like more than reverb, like actually the voice of the singer before the singing starts)

like in "Stink Fist" by Tool. edit- I should add, at the very start of the song.

And more recently I noticed it in "boom boom pow" by the black eyed peas. (Not exactly sure where in the song, but when the girl singer comes in)
Don't kid, you know you've heard the song. way, way too many times...

is this accomplished in a similar fashion?

I'm trying to remember the passage in Stink Fist - the most recent use of this kind of effect I'm remembering is from "The Pot," is that by chance what you're thinking of?

Anyway, alledgedly it's possible to do something like that by tracking tape too hot, and I remember someone tried to convince me that's probably what they did, but at the end of the day the easiest way to do that is to use the exact same process Chibi mentioned, but instead of reverb use a delay plugin.

But I've been spending my day messing around with reverse reverbs - and god I love the sound! So creepy,

It has to be what I'm thinking of, but it seems there is a little more going on though - anyone know?

Also, how do they get it at just the start of the vocals. Is automation the only way? Automation in cubase really bugs me, because if you want to automate the reverb - it will give you a dozen different parameters instead of just "reverb on, reverb off".
 
I'm having a hard time trying to record just the reverb in logic.
1. I dup'd the vocal track
2. reversed the dup
3. added a long plate reverb to the dup vocal track
4. set the output of the track with the dup and reverb to Aux bus 1.
5. Created a new track, and set the input to "Bus 1"

when i hit record, nothing happens.

Can anyone help?

Well, you can just slice the clip and then cut out the unwanted other reverb
 
That's cool. I might try that sometime. One of my reels has the play reverse option so it would be an easy thing to do.
 
Alright, all you logic users, I figured it out on my end.

1. Add vocal track
2. Duplicate vocal track
3. Reverse Duplicated vocal track
4. Set the output of the duplicated reversed vocal track to BUS 1
5. On Bus 1, add a reverb plug-in, season to taste.
6. Set the output of Bus 1 to BUS 2.
7. Add a new track
8. set the input of that track to be BUS 2.
9. Record the reverb.
