How to get that DEEEEP bass...

I split off drum loops into a bandpass filter sometimes and then into a saturation or heavy compression plugin. Adjust the cutoff of the BPF to somewhere between 60 and 125 Hz, turn up the rez to taste, and blend it back in to get the right amount of thump. I guess that's basically just a glorified eq boost, but it's a more electronica artist approach. Plus you can compress or saturate that bass band to your hearts content.

i didn't know they were still making the SR-16.

look to see if there is an 808 drum on the SR-16. its always impressed me as a usable and stabe if not tremendous piece of gear, but bass-shaking is not an adjective that comes to mind.

if you are using it with a software recorder (like cakewalk) then just sample the 808 from an old-school hip-hop tune and use that. i say old-school because they tended to let the 808 stand on its own, and the instrumentation was minimal so you can get a pretty clean 808 without having to try to EQ some other sound out.

ps. I use an Ensoniq ASR-x with the requisite hip-hop ROM card, and its got some very usable, deep, kick sounds. Whereas my XV-3080 has some good bass sounds, but the drum sounds (especially the kick and snare) are more sterile.

A good tube will do it. Try a sans amp.

Most of the mixing I do is for live shows. Some days I feel like I really can't get a good sound out of a band. 9 times out of 10 it's because of the quality of the sounds coming off stage. I mix a band here called Feebo, and another called Reason Disappears. They both have one thing in common.. they keep their instruments in good condition, and they use good gear. With Feebo, I take a DI out of the Ampeg (post-pre), and with Reason Disappears, I take a DI out of his rack sans-amp.

Part of the bass sound though, is how it blends with the guitars. Crappy guitar sound will weaken the blend of bass & guitar.

Once you've got down the sound you want, remove ALL of the elements of that sound that are not important to attaining your goal. Don't add anything. You don't need any crazy harmonics processors either, but making sure the bass lines are tighly sync'ed to the kick drums will also help.

Cheers.

i had a lot of problems with live show recording (on 8 or 10 channels), geting good bass sound couse bass from D.I is not always great.. but than i get IK Amplitube plug-in and now i'm happy...
