get this effing spyware shit offa my computer?!?!?
It changes my homepage settings, throws me popups of software to make it go away & popups of porn sites, makes my cd drives open & then gives a window saying something like "if your CD drives have opened you have spyware on your computer!!!! Download XXX (i don't remember the name) to get rid of these annoying popups forever!!!!"

I've got Spybot, and I ran it, said it "fixed" everything. Is it possible that there's some kinda .exe on my machine now that is making this happen?

Oh yeah, when I open explorer, it also opens a window, but only in the taskbar (is that what it's called @ the bottom of the screen where you can open/close/minimize/restore windows in open apps?). If I click on it, right or left, nothing happens.

Damn, do I hate surfing with windows now. Time to fire up the trusty old imac (at least I know how to better maintain it)...

What OS are you running? Chances are there is a program in your startup folder that launches everytime you reboot. You need to find it and deactivate it.

If you get those "messenger service" popups, check out this link to turn off Windows messenger...

http://www.dvdsqueeze.com/windowsmessage.htm

Something I do every once in a while is go to the start menu, click 'run...' then type 'msconfig'. The very last tab on the right is every service that is set to start up with windows. Some of it might be popup software. This is more of a temporary solution, and ad-aware should remove most of that stuff. The msconfig is also good for turning off startup programs for a faster boot and more free system resources.

Thanks for the replies, folks...

OS = XP Pro.
Patience = nil.

Thanks for the links, too. I'll read what they gotta say & go from there...

Ug...

--->thanks, to you too, trogdor...

you know what. total cleaning. format your hardrive and never return to the site where you get that spyware. i do the same. :)

Spysweeper!!!

I paid $29.95 for a 1 yr subscription and it updates itself every 2-3 days.
I know there's free stuff out there, but the people I know that use it still get bullshit slipping through.

Spysweeper works very well. It's worth every penny...
I'm highly satisfied with it.

Subtractor,

thanks for the webroot link. The system audit link is down, tho...

jerberson12,

problem is I dunno where that shit came from. If nothing else works, I will reformat my drive, but to say "I don't want" to is an understatement.

Thanks again all,
