Also xp runs registered services that do not show up in that task manager. You have to go to the administrators tools to see them in control panel and unregister them. Of coures you have to know which one are needed to run windows. There are windows tweeks programs to shut these off.

768MB of RDRAM PC1066 here (no option for 768 on the poll).
But use sample libraries for everything but vocals so I will be upgrading to 2GBs+ when I upgrade, at this point I have to render each instrument to udio before moving on to a new insrument. Even with DFD.

damn ddr in dual channel at 1gig makes your computer a whole lot faster as well.
I have pc3200 (400mhz) Corsair 3200 twinx 1gig. Corsair makes the best memory on the market. As well you can buy this memory on ebay used for $160 and it is backed by a lifetime warranty it is so good.

lol my gf just got a amd athlon 64 with 500megs of ram and says its slow? I might have to upgrade the memory for her with low latency game memory... now that makes a computer move.

On my PC I never exceeded 512.
On my new mac I start out with 2.5 Gb.
Will upgrade to 4.5 Gb later, but need to buy some other gear first

You actually have a need for 4.5 gb of ram or is it just to brag? I had have huge projects on 1 gb and don't see the need for anymore then 1gb I guess it makes the computer overall faster, and the bandwidth issues are nonexistent yet that is more important for video issues and not music.
So seriously, why do you need 2.5 gb of ram much less that 4.5 gb.

Well, ram tests run on Mac and Photoshop shows great improvement up to 2.5 Gb ram. From there and up it ain't the same improvement.
But I might come to the point where I want to load samples (BFD etc..) into RAM. Then 2.5 might come short. My projects normally grow very complicated, and hopefully 4.5 gb will come in more handy than 2.5. I also plan to edit video on that G5.

Well cool, I have a pretty damn nice pc at only 2.4ghz with a gig of ram. But it is old by todays standards, but it does just fine in cubase sx2 with loads of softsynths and plugins. I recently was considering buying a tc electronics powercore and thought to myself; "What is the point?" I have plenty of power with my computer, before I didn't think I had enough power but it turned out I didn't know how to use my machine properly. That ddr2 ram seems cool and so does the pci express on the new pc's.
The mac's are cool and stuff, but honestly I don't see how they are better than a pc in any way shape or form. Pc's and Mac's have the same technical probelms, pc's it is drivers, mac's it is extensions. I have read about Mac users having to reinstall the whole system just like us pc doods do. I am just as good with a mac as windows, yet you can buy a crazy nice pc or build one for ~$1,000 or you can buy a used mac on ebay for ~$2000-3000. I would never currently be able to justify the cost of a mac. For one, I don't see how it is any better, Next it costs 2x as much, then with current updates in the pc world I don't see the point. I know people say oh IBM developed the new processor for the G5 and it is just so amazing. I have used G4's a bunch and they seem like every other mac I have ever used, which is just like a pc. I know everyone says macs are better for art, well that is better general of a statement. The only "edge" mac's have over pc is in video production, that is their niche market. I suppose you can include audio into the mix, but any computer can do audio, lol. You don't need a new dual processor G5 to make music, at least music that people want to listen too. Perhaps if you do film scores that have a full orchestra of samples, even then I don't think you need a G5 for.
Of course if I had tons of money I would buy a super fast computer, and I guess that would be a G5, since it is the most powerful computer on the market, or is that just a marketing gimic. Sorry to be skeptical, but advertising doesn't real break through to me, so apple paid a bunch of people to rate the G5 high, at least that is what GM did with the M300 car of the year. I don't even have proof that they did, I don't need proof. You can buy any product that is highly marketed and it always blows compared to the unit that is superior in every way shape and form that is not advertisted. I don't even think apple gives a rats ass about music, they care about the money though. That is why the pc market has opened up to music production, enough small users do it now that it is a marketable product.
No one really actually cares about music production, only we the artists do.

G5s are definitely not the fastest or most powerful computer on the market, by a longshot.
Just look into the server market. Your mind will be blown.

Cool Beans. I was in need for a new toy, as my old PC killed all the flow and fun of making music. I also wanted to use the Logic Pro 7. PC's can't handle that. So I bought a Mac Put simple

4 gigs of ram. Loving it. I have ram that runs programs, ram that caches the disk ram that holds data and even more ram that just sits in that huge box and says "pick me, pick me, me me me me!". You can never have too much damn ram got it ? If you have enough ram chips to threaten your health when dropped on you from say 10-12 feet than you may have enough ram for this year.

Wow, I can't believe you guys actually think that that much RAM is needed. I have a Pentium 4 2.4 ghz, and 512MB ram. I use Cubase and usually do recordings with about 25 to 35 tracks.
I have been wanting to upgrade to 1 GB for no particular reason, because I have no problems what so ever, so first I did a performance test on my computer at 512 mb by watching all system resource dispursements on the 512 mb. I noticed that less than half of the total resources were being used by the system even with my most demanding recording work.
Then I went to Best Buy since they had a special for 2 512 chips at 44.95 each and installed them and did the same test. Absolutely no difference in performance...it still was using about 250 mb of total system memory when I threw everything at it. I even tried opening up many programs with the one 512 chip and wasnt able to push it past 300 mb usage, even with 12 programs open...
So, it's completely pointless to have even 1 GB in my opinion. I ended up taking the 2 chips back to Best buy. I can see it might be different if I was working with video, but the thing that is most taxed on my computer is the processor, definately not the memory. It stays completely stable in all circumstances memory-wise on audio recording...
