How much gain for low output dynamics?

I'm in the process of buying preamp for recording interviews
with dynamic mic like EV RE50 (-55dB) or AKG D230 (-52dB).
How much gain do I need to record quiet speaking from
distances as far as one meter?

I'm considering Sound Devices MixPre/MM-1 or
FMR audio RNP. Both of these preamps will give
66 dB gain, is this enough?

How does MixPre/MM-1 compare for RNP by sound quality?

66db of gain should be enough. I've never used either of those preamps,so I can't comment on quality.

Ooh I don't know about that. Conversation at a meter is maybe 60dB at the mic, and those sensitivity ratings are at 74dBSPL, so you might need another 14dB gain from the rating (which with a reference of 0dBV is a little below +4dBu as well), which is getting pretty close to your max gain. Quiet conversation could require even more gain. It's could be pretty tight.

You might need to consider moving the mics closer to the source, getting the source to talk louder, or using condenser mics.

If your recorder/converter inputs are -10dBV, you should be OK though.
