How much can I do with a 550K6-2 w/160MB of RAM?

Those dedicated DSP cards are still so high in price...

I'm guessing very few homeys have them. The other downside is that they're all still somewhat proprietary in what platforms/software they'll work with.

I'll torture my CPU for the time being.... :eek:

I'll just second what everyone else has said, the K6 is not a very good chip for audio. It has to do with what is called Floating Point maths vs. Integer math. All PC processors have FPU sections that deal with floating point math. It just happens that the K6, while equal or slightly faster than the Pentium chip at integer math, was significantly slower at floating point. And most audio applications (especially plugins) are very heavy users of floating point math.

right im about to enter the big wonderful world of recording ive got me a copy of pro tools plus various stienberg software now, i was wondering if any one could advise me on the best way to set up a cheap 16 track recording system using my pc(i presume pro tools is going to be the recording device)i need to know the best sound card to buy baring in mind i have very low budget 200-250 quid is about my limit im awaiting delivery of a spirit mixer so all i need is to link it to my pc and then i have the very bare bones for recording with right...so what sound card and how do i connect a desk with stereo outputs to my pc......thanks all
