How much "air" is too much?

My bet is on the speaker technology of the day. In the 80s and 90s titanium tweeters became the defacto standard. They produce frequencies that speakers pre-1980 couldn't. Mixes used to compensate for the lack of efficiency and range of the tweeters back then. This includes horn loaded speakers as well. It was the only game in town so they didn't know they were doing it. This is why there was a huge flood of remastered mixes in the 90s.

Personally I don't buy the 0dbFs thing. Massenburg and other have ears like elephants and would hear digital clipping miles away. Besides the 96dB SNR of 16 bit digital was a luxury compared to tape SNRs even with Dolby S Pro. Furthermore, they put soft limiters in front of digital recorder inputs to avoid hard clipping.
