I've heard a lot of good music in here. How many of you in this forum have taken your stuff to pro studios for mixing or mastering or both, either before (unlikely) or after you've posted it here? Or before you've burned it to CD?

Good Lord, not I!

If anyone NEEDS one though, and happens to be near the Muscle Shoals area soon, I'm hireable.

Cheap.

One of my current projects is my own band's CD, and I do intend to have it mastered at a local facility before having the CDs pressed.

Okay, so far I've trawled two engineers. :D I'm fishing for home recordists, though. Anyone?

home recordists and outside engineering seem to be a conflict just in itself. I think that most home recordists, like myself consider the studio as much an instrument as their guitars, and prefer to twiddle the knobs to their own preference. The amatuers that really suck, I am sure would welcome more experienced help, but they probably would just go to a pro studio if they weren't involved in it 100%. Mastering is another subject, and I, like probably many others would have it done outside of the home, if the project warrented the extra expense. Otherwise, you live with your "home brew" master until the occasion arises. I don't think many here posting are looking for opinions on their prof. mastered stuff, as the decisions have been pretty much made at that point, and changes are kinda out of the question...especially urged by internet opinions on a message board such as this. I may be wrong, but I don't think so. I think people are looking for feedback on how they do it THEMSELVES....not how the studio they hired did.

one other thing...Dobro..concerning your last sentence in the original post...."before burning to CD." I think bands, people, etc that are doing more than the typical home burning of CD's (even though I have probably done easily several thousand at this point now)..like in the wanting 2000 copies, artwork, etc...that project will probably also incorporate the extra outside professional audio expenses too. If they are doing 100 copies or less to use as promos, Christmas gifts, give to Mom and Pop...naw...all done at home. I guess you are wondering, who/what songs have done what your asking...and maybe in future posts in this forum, a little more info on behalf of the artist might be additionally useful and entertaining ;-)
I do see that many post..."hey..listen to this" ..and that's about it...no info, unless specifically asked.

Well, the reason I posted this question in this forum is that the people who post here are actually producing something and trying to get it good-sounding. Like I said, I think it's unlikely someone would take their tracks to a pro for mastering and then post the mp3 here. What I really want to know is: how many home recordists here have taken their stuff to a pro studio for mixing or mastering or both?

well..I have worked on both sides of the glass, if that adds in any tallys taken. But no, I haven't actually taken stuff to a studio just to mix...BUT, I have taken tracks HOME that where recorded at a studio to mix and master at home....how 'bout dem apples?

we had a cd recorded ata studio and matered by some dude once. We sold them all and never made any more, cuz I hate it. I thought it was the most dog-awful peice of shit Ive ever heard. so when we started talking cds again, I bought gear instead of studio time, and started reading up. some of youall might remember me back then, trying to figure out the difference between bit depth and sample rate. Now Im almost done, and we totally plan to have these tracks Mastered. and this one I like.

xoxo
