How many mix down to analog?

I used to use this model JVC 6x2 jobby back in the 80s with a Sony reel to reel. If you're looking for that minimalist vibe. It's on permanent loan to the kid next store who has done some amazing stuff with a casio a mic and a sound card. . . The backlit VU meters are inspiring.

That would work pretty well for this sort of effort. The stereo capability is over the top for my needs though, ha!

Thanks for the input...

Edit - does it have xlr inputs?

Nope, 1/4" I did mostly direct in synth on the rca jacks, had some cheap-ass Radio Shack microphones and an XLR to 1/4" transformer for the one nice electro-voice 731. I still have the EV mic, and the transformer is around somewhere...

I'm actually facing a similar quandary, I'm going to record a choir in May, I plan to use a Blumlein pair and go straight to DAT from the tube preamps I am building (that's the compromise for having to go to DAT) - (sorry guys -- it's easier then lugging around an Otari half track) but thought I might want to mic the piano separately, which means I need more tracks. I might go with my 22-4, but (a) it isn't recently calibrated and (b) it also isn't that easy to lug around.

Ugg, id like those few hours of my life back...

Half the band showed up a hour and a half late. Then they proceeded to brawl about the set list.

A couple poitives though. Black metal may be the perfect genre for analog recording. No dynamic range in it, its loud and constant. You wont hear tape hiss in it, lol. Seriously i set the levels once and didnt mess with them at all. The vu looks as close to indicating a test tone as anything ive recorded (except for test tones).

I also let tape roll through all the brawling, that may have value down the road:listeningmusic:

Make a reference disk....white noise, pink noise and now you have black noise. :)

I have a few classics like that from our band practices. If that band ever goes major label ....they will be priceless. :D
