"How many guitars do you NEED?"

I think it's funny when sucky guitar players have like 20 guitars. Like that makes the any better.
I'll try harder.

it isn't really about number for me (once we hit 6 or 7 anyway). Need is one acoustic, one electric, but when opportunity comes up, sometimes you have to take advantage. So my revised need(isH) list is:
Acoutstic 6
acoustic 12
nylon string (satistfied thisone with a $5 yard sale purchase, thank god).
electric humbuckers (LP)
electric sc (strat)
semi hollowbody (big gap right now, 335 on the wish list)
and bass (fender jazz at this point)

My trouble is that only the electrics are decent, everything else is totally cheap and playable, but not what i would call a recording quality instument. Over time i will be updating each to something that will sounds good recorded, and then perhaps iw ill be satisfied, not likely though.

And this picture demonstrates that he doesn't know beans about intonation.

I don't get it.

For the acoustic player. Here we see a design that Chip came up with that employs a Brass insert with a screw slot. Intonation is set for 10-46. A template from Stew Mac was used to determine the ideal intonation point. Chip also worked on an acoustic design that uses standard Strat styled saddles that are fully adjustable. According to Chip, "they don’t adversely affect the sound, and you don’t have to modify your bridge to use them".

It is surely unconventional. Lots of his stuff is weird. He has this little bass that he says sounds like a regular sized one. He still goes to bat for the T-60, and believe it or not Carvin M-22 pickups.

I respect the guy for not treating every instrument like a piece of furniture. I think they're tools. I don't agree with everything he says, but probably a greater percentage than most of the "guitar builders" whose dissertations I've read here and other places.

Apl, you're like the West virginian making fun of people from Kentucky. You have a hardon for those shitty carvins that everyone dogs so you have to tear down my People's Guitar. You obviously don't know shit about them. The only level they appeal to most people is technical/mehcanical. I thought you were a screwdriver guy.

Sorry, I didn't mean to come across harshly. He does some cool stuff for sure. However there is no "ideal intonation point," especially on a guitar which allows for string action to be raised and lowered. And his template is for three plain and three wound strings. The wound G will be flat if the other strings' intonations are close. I'd be very interested in seeing his fully adjustable acoustic bridge.

it's interested how we confuse "need" with "have".... do we end up needing everything we get?

anyway, the true answer is one. I've seen some pretty good guitar players get through entire shows with just one guitar!

I was reminded of that the other night

We went to see Ian Anderson, and his guitar player had exactly 2 guitars. One electric and one acoustic. The elcetric was a 335, and I couldn't make out the name of the acoustic. It looked very Taylor-ish, but it wasn't a Taylor.

I wish I knew what Ian played. It was a really tiny guitar, but it sounded great.

Nice drums, BTW. :D

how many ??

:D :D :D when i play gigs [ and i do lots of them] the only time i switch guitars is when i break a string..... i normaly take 2 giutars..... and 90% of the time they will be les pauls........... so why do i own so many ????? cuz i am a guitar junkie...... the more i get the more i want

Oh, right, go and spoil the mood with reality!

Well, thanks mister 'Oh I've got plenty, I don't need any more'

That's pretty hot. I want it.

I have too many dead guitars and not enough working ones. If all the dead ones were working and weren't crappy, I'd be okay. Maybe.

I can't believe there are almost 70 reviews for the Hello Kitty.. Is that really needed, I think 1 review would cover it...

All of them!

Um... well, I just NEED the one.

But we all have needs.... :D

I just wish I'd bought a guitar every time I had an urge to. Then I'd have to get a bigger house and maybe there would be room for a studio. As it is, there's the Taylor, a brace of Corts, a Washburn and my old Gibson-In-Pieces. I do lust for a 12-string now and then...

Actually, Slim raises a really good point. I don't know how many of the guitars I've got now I could say I don't 'need'. Maybe only a couple out of a dozen, and there are still some on my wish list anyway.

Ah, yes. An acoustic 12. And an electric 12 - single coil. And a humbucker electric 12, and an acoustic-electric 12, and...

Btw

the only reason I dog Carvins is I don't like the look (and I like to razz APL).

I actually think they are a quality instrument, just not my cup of tea.

But really well built.

guitars i need ??

most of the guitars i have i dont need..... i could live w/ just 1 les paul.... and maby the strat.....

I think I understand your philosophy of collecting now.

Always be prepared. :D

Is that a Stew Mac you're working on, and what kind of guitar is/was Callie?

The graphics on it aren't my thing, but the rest of it is just gorgeous, right down to the knobs. Primo. Absolutley stunning.

And the link to the custom shop is dead, BTW.

I think I'm up to 43 or 44. I need all of them! :p Don't get me started about how many amps.

Although I'll tell buddies/co-workers about my small "amp farm," it's really more like an "amp patch," as I can honestly count on one hand the number of amps I own. That'll change, eventually, but I don't see myself collecting all that many amps. So far, I'm all solid state, but since I'm looking to do quite a bit of surf guitar stuff, I'll be looking to go with a tube amp, or two, in the coming future.

Yea, I had a biker paint shop do it. It is gorgeous. But the real key to her, is the electronics. It's a stero setup that I wired it for. The pickup selector is 6 position. 3 for mono and 3 that routes stero. I can run it into my Marshall on one pickup and the other goes to my Mesa. It is very awsome sounding. Each of the volume and tone pots are also push/pull. They choose the individual pickup configuration. The pickups can go humbucker, either single coil or out of phase.

The actual guitar was a les paul copy that was given to me, it was junk when I started. The intonation was way off but the neck was straight. That's why I refinished it. I put in new frets, moved the bridge and changed the tuners. It was a lot of work, but she really jams now.
