If you record in a real studio how many hours does it take to
record one song? I'm trying to calculate the cost to record
in a local studio.

I know how many hours it takes on my home equipment. The more people you add into the mix the longer it's going to take....

I suppose it could be infinite...right?

It depends. Around here on average I tell people to count on 4 hours per tune without editing. With editing it could be 8 hours +. Famous last words from almost every band I've ever recorded was "Oh, we're tight man, we'll blast right through these tunes". Like I said, famous last words.

Figure about an hour+ per minute of tracking.

That's if everyone is prepared and no one is screwing around.

There is never enough time. It's a matter of how much time you can afford. Figure out how many songs you need and divide your budget up into hours per song for tracking and mixing.

That's how long it will take.

I'm with Track Rat. That's about right around here, too, for most bands. It's always more for a band that's really great, or really awful, or for someone who just wants the quickest, crappiest, recording for a demo to give to mom and dad.

I'm very please at this moment in time to be able to give you the benefit of all my years recording - by giving you a very, very accurate average of how long it takes to record and mix a song.
Between 1 hour and 3 month.
Did that help???
