It's just a short clip, just for learning to mix my own stuff. I'm new into this homerecording basically and haven't done many clips myself before. Will record the entire guitar tracks once it sounds okay and I know how to edit it to my liking.

How is it so far?

It sounds best with a surround set cranked . Sounds pretty shitty on my earphones. I tried to cut out some of the fizz somewhere in the higher frequencies, but I couldn't really find them when EQ sweeping. Seems like the fizz is everywhere. I now got a narrow cut of several dB's at around 4k to cut the fizz, and this is definately less fizzy than without it.

Another reason for this thread: I need some comments on my results, since I think my monitors (surround system) are a little bassheavy, and so my kick and bass might be a bit weak ór too obvious in the mix. Then I might need some studio monitors. Any suggestions? Preferably not too expensive...

I'm just learning the whole EQ thing as well. Guitars have a HP at 80 Hz, and a LP at around 10 kHz. Kick has a boost at around 40 Hz and a HP and LP around that point. And the basstrack has a boost at around 60 Hz and a HP.

Any comments?

??

Did you mic an amp and record or did you DI the guitar and use a plugin? Doesn't sound very good the guitar tone is baggy and open.

How did u record the guitar?

It's a modded JCM 800 miced up and dual tracked. I've modded the amp more since this was recorded and it's got a new output transformer cause the stock one blew.

I will record the entire guitar tracks again. Probably with a different mic placement. This one was pretty standard, just in the middle of the speaker.

What are the guitar tracks lacking? Presence? In-your-face sound? Attack?

Bass has to go down obviously, any cheap recommendations for a pair of studio monitors?

Guitars also have a bit of compression, but really, it's barely noticable. Just seems to fatten it up a tiny bit:

Firstly cut back on the treble on your amp and some mid. Then try and download some free eq plugin for ur daw, that should sort some of the sound frequencies out. I would add a tiny bit of reverb just enough to add some depth to the texture. Try and mic you speaker so that the mic is facing straight between the end of the cone and and the amp body. If you want a thrashier sound tilt ur mic to a 45 degree angle.

Some of the EQ frequencies you mentioned would definitely cause some issues. Basically any time you're working with the frequencies between 20-90Hz or so, you have to be extremely careful about boosting anything. These frequencies are less heard, and more felt (ok, well at least in the lower end of the range I mentioned). Bass and kick inherently use many of the same frequencies, so you'll have to find a "pocket" for each to fit in. the fact that you boosted one at 40Hz and one at 60Hz tells me without even listening, that you probably created some mud in the bottom end. You also mentioned that you put a hp and lp "around" that frequency on the kick??? Is that right? I can't think of any reason you would want to put a lp any where near that. Also, in the guitar, you might try using a low frequency roll off in addition to the hp at 80Hz. Or, also you spoke mentioned double tracking the guitar part. You might try panning them very far apart, and use a dramatic hp around 250-400Hz. If you still have the other track with the lows in it, this second track will have a lot more clarity to it, but won't wound thin. Also, this leaves a "pocket" for your bass potentially. Say your guitar with the lows way cut out is panned to the right. I would slightly pan the bass in that direction as well because you already know it has a low end "pocket" to sit in because you created one. Careful though not to pan the bass too far. With metal, you usually don't want to pan snare, kick, or bass too far from center or else they just kind of jump out of the mix and sound funny. Like they were some afterthought added late in the game. Hope some of my blabbering gives you ideas... I'm really bored at work and I need to pass the next hour so I can go home for the weekend!!!

you need to get the bass drum out there just a little more.
add some verb to the drums?
