How important is RMS in mastering?

I never look at or try to match rms numbers when mastering. They can be very deceiving when it comes to perceived loudness. You can have two different sources reading the same number that sound worlds apart. I did try it when I first started but realized it was a lost cause early on. If anything, a/bing and listening can be more beneficial.

RMS is terms of noise floor, when speaking of crest factor and things of that nature peak to average ratio, hope Im clear.

Eh, I guess they mean as much as you want them to mean. I don't pay attention to meters (unless I'm calibrating equipment -- Though I do leave a meter engaged here and there while working just to make sure everything is "within spec" for lack of a better term).

When the Avocet (monitoring controller) is set at it's "home" position, that's what I care about. How loud it is at that spot. What the number is doesn't matter.
