Ok, so now with 2 ADAT XT 20s i have 16 possible channels of audio. A 1604VLZ really is great for an 8 track studio, or going straight into the computer. however, 16 tracks its not the friendliest. I don't want to buy a larger board for size/money reasons and this has been my solution.

How did i get around this?

Use the Aux returns as tape monitors! I bet this has been said before. This is what i did

INPUT
channel 1- LOH
channel 2- ROH
channel 3- Kick
channel 4- Snare
channel 5- rack tom
channel 6- floor tom
channel 7- Guitar 1
channel 8- Guitar 2
channel 9- bass
channel 10- Lead Vox
channel 11- Backup vox

Ok so you ask you only have 8 direct outs? well yea then i put 9-11 on different busses and used the buss outs. I now only have channels 12-16 left. thats 5 for 11 feeds i need to monitor. For those 5 i put Kick, Snare, tom1, tom 2, and bass on(thats 6 more i need). So what i did is i noticed that the Aux returns have stereo returns to the main mix so i put the LOH and ROH onto stereo 1 (thats 4 more i need) then i put guitars 1 and 2 on stereo return 2 (thats 2 more i need) and then i put lead vox on return 3 and backup on return 4.

This way you can record 11 live tracks at a band practice AND listen back immediately.

A similar method can be used when you then make overdubs for the next 5 tracks.

Then come mixdown, just stick all 16 outputs from the ADATs into the 16 line ins and you have all your FX sends back and busses etc etc...
