How fast is everyone's computer?

Er, and although I don't use Sonar primarily, I've never had problems with it. You should be just fine, especially with 1 gig of ram.

If you're just mixing tracks the limit is going to be the harddrive if that's where all the audio data is being read from. The cpu could likely process 100 or more tracks in memory.

It's the plugins that drain the cpu.

Athlon 1900 and 2200 cpu units. Before that, Pentium III 933, and before that, Pentium III 533. I don't expect to upgrade again anytime soon.

BTW, christiaan, the page I was looking at (the first one listed in my search) was referring to a 40GB HDD with a 3MB/sec sustained transfer rate.
Link?
A 40GB hard drive doing 3MB/s has a problem.

Mine hasn't moved at all in 6 mos. Guess it must be pretty slow.

:D

Seriously, track count is dependent on the throughput of your HDD's, and RAM.

CPU horsepower is for plug-ins.

the speed of my cpu is 1.7GHz...is that wat ur asking?

my performance rating is 1865 (estimated)...are these good? i dont kno much bout computers as u kno.

You need to find out what the sustained read/write speeds are for your HDD. The more data your storage system can move, the more tracks you'll be able to run.

Fast HHD's have never been cheaper than they are now. You can never have too much storage. Maybe you should get a couple newer drives, and use your old one for a backup.

Here's a good site for HDD info.

1800+ AMD, 512MB DDR, 40 gig 7200rpm drives. I get over 24 tracks at 24/48 all the time, in CEP2.

Sounds like something's bunk with your system.

My system has exactly the same numbers, except I use n-track. It's been awhile but I do believe I had upwards of 80 tracks (don't ask :D) before any signs of glitching at one point.

M-brane - is this what i should be looking at?

front bus speed: 4 x 100MHz (400MHz data rate)
Memory Bus Speed: 2 x 133MHz (266 Mhz data rate)

Mine is an Athlon 2100 which is overclocked from 1.7 up to 2ghz. Not that there's a huge difference (except for bragging rights and maybe a titch more heat :-) paired with 512mb DDR RAM and 7200 80GB HD I've never had any problems with cubase SX running multiple plugins or VST instruments.

One thing that I did not see mentioned, and this was some advice that was given to me when I first started the recording. Go to your task manager and kill all daemons (sorry we are talking Windows here) Processos that are running in the background that are not necessarry. Also disable any anti virus program that you are running. (That is because when the tracks are laid from your RAM to the HD Nortan of Mcaffie wants to scan them and that increases the risk of an error while writting.)

Hope that helps a little

This is what i got.....

Im running an AMD Athlon XP 2700+, 80GB hd, 1GB ram, XP Pro and Sonar 2.0 XL.....

That's your RAM (memory). You need to test your hard disk drives to find out how fast they can move data.

If you know the model # of your HDD a quick search on Storage Review should give you the specs, or maybe a trip to the manufacturer's website.
