How exactly might I do this - filling in the holes

I'm so frustrated with the complexity of Sonar, here's my plan, and I'd like to know what you think, and if you can fill in a couple of holes for me like: how does SMPTE work, and how can I use soft synths/midi with this set up.

Here's what I'm thinking of doing:

Cool Edit Pro

Guitar into Mesa preamp + TC G-Force into soundcard

Bass into TC G-Force/soundcard

Alesis HR-16 - used as a master and synced to Cool Edit, but I don't know the SMPTE part (could someone explain what I'd buy, and how it works...pretty please)

And various soft synths on my computer, triggered by an Edirol PCR-30, and hopefully recorded as midi (i.e., not in real time, since my keyboarding skills suck).

Will this type of thing work? What do I need for HR-16/SMPTE/syncing with Cool Edit?

If I use a stand alone soft synth like Absynth, can that be "SMPTEd up" as well?

Sonar is taking the fun out of this for me, I know it rocks, I just only have a day or two each week to sit down with music, and it's just too much work for me to learn so much.

Thanks very much,
Shawn:)

You don't need SMPTE, just midi, although a program like Cakewalk/Sonar might be better suited as they're software sequencers.

No SMPTE? Good stuff:)

I used to use the HR all the time, and for building the bones, there is nothing easier for me - which at this point is a great need, ease.

If I can sync keys afterwards, that'd be great, but just getting a drum machine as my master into an audio program, recording live bass and guitar, would be perfect for me.

I actually like the possibilities of Sonar, but for bedtracks, it's really slowing me down. Maybe the plan should be to get bass/drums/guitar down through live, and synced drum machine, in Cool Edit, then transport to Sonar.

Anyone done that kind of thing?

I really just want to start recording, all this learning is driving me bananas LOL.
