How does diaphragm size/polar pattern relate to mic applications?

Post High School Education?

I've been reading through this thread for several months and been watching it develop. I've always been interested in sound engineering and worked with my high school's drama club. Most recently have been working on setting up a studio in my basement.
I'm nearing the end of my high school career and am working on deciding which college to attend. I'm really interested in what I've been doing and want to learn more (tracking, mixing, accoustic engineering, etc. ) What field/major do you guys (especially Harvey) do you recommend I explore? Where should I start out in college if I want to end up working in a studio or doing live sound? What higher education have you guys experienced?
Thanks for your input- I'm sure many other viewers of this thread will be interested as well.
 
Harvey,I keep bumping this because it is the BEST article on mics I have read and anytime anyone ask a question on mics in another forum I gotta send them here.This should be required reading in "Mics 101"! :D :D

just a little advice DONT PRINT THIS unless you have thousands of pieces of paper. I printed this whole thread it took about 4 hours with my printer and i went through a couple packages of paper.

Lets have a party with little gift packs of microphones.

Axis, you know for what you spent on wear and tear on your printer and the paper, you could have gone out and bought a nice mic. :)
 
But now he knows what kind of mic to buy, and how to position it.

This post is for the man, Harvey Gerst. I finally had a chance to use the Marshall MXL-603S and the Behringer ECM8000 that you reccommended on my friend's old J-45. The beast has been tamed. Many thanks and hats off to a true master.
 
Maybe this has been covered - but I havn't seen it.

On the one hand, the 3:1 rule is reccomended...

Each mic should be 3 times as far away from each other as the first one is to the source.

So why does XY micing work?

If the mics are so close. Seems like if say, one was 2 feet from the guitar...according to the 3:1 rule, the next mic would have to be like 6 feet away from that mic.

With XY...they are right next to each other - I don't get it :(
