How do YOU write a song? Any tips?

don't you guys know the secret to writing songs?

you write a thirty minute Gentle Giant-type odyssey then take out the shitty stuff.

The last 14 songs I've written(I've written and recorded over 60)I wrote out subject matter ideas on a notepad.

I wrote out 30 topics or so and got 14 songs out of it.

For example:I wrote out as a subject "going to concerts when I was a kid"....2 days later a song titled "When the Lights Go Down" was written.....etc etct etc.

Almost all of the other songs I have written were done by playing an acoustic guitar(distorted electric guitars dont seem to trigger melodies and hooks the way that an acoustic does IMHO,even if the tune is going to be a distorted rocker) noodling around with chords and stuff until a melody popped in my head ,and I would start singing that melody(even if it was with a dummy lyric).
Sometimes I would write the chorus first and then write verses around it.
Other times I would write a lot of the verses and come up with a chorus last.
Bridges are always fun to come up with. It's a challenge most of the time to come up with a Bridge that really adds something to the song instead of just a couple of different chords with lyrics that repeat what has already been said in the song.

Then there is spontaneous writing when something(or somebody) writes through you and you have very little to do with the whole process other then being the channel by which the song got into this realm.

Those are just a few of my techniques.Im really looking forward to trying new techniques such as the one Joro practices. That sounds like fun.

Im glad I could help you with your future writing endeavours Jon.

I cant help you with the pooping in the pants thing though. The best thing to do is just change your pants.

....INSPIRING TONE

I think Acoustic guitars are great, I love em. But if I'm writing a self-indulgent metal opus, I need an appropriate tone to write with. I think when you have a sustained searing guitar tone it lends itself better to writing guitar driven rock.

In thi respect I think the POD is the guitarists best songwriting tool invented since the drum machine and four track. ANy songwriting inspiring tone I need is in this puppy. from clean Strat tones to deafening metal split stereo sounds. All here.
I can wake up outta bed at 3am and build a tune. And as we all know, strumming an acoustic guitar at 3am full boar can wake the whole house up. And songwriting *is not* about capturing a 1st class performance under premium conditions. It's about getting the idea down. And having all the tracks to do that is an amazing feat for songwriters.

Listen to The Beates for an entire day from 7am till 9pm, then start writing songs all night.

Try to steel a few good tunes and change them so that nobody would recognise them.

Not that I'm doin that, nonono, bad thing. Don't.

Oh yeah they call that: being inspired by others.

dje Don't try to be original cause it will not work anyway. Get pissed, do some lalala while recording it and maybe you made a hit.

You know record some sex events from yourself or others and the lyrics you can create will amaze you.

have fun..

I've actually heard shit like that on music choice! Porn house...
It was actually kind of kewl in a novelty sort of way. But I wouldn't reccomend it with children in the room!

Ofcourse not I'm a respected father.

But another idea. Record childern's talking. Man you can really come up with some great lyrics.

When I write a song, it usually comes into my head with the whole band playing - which makes it hard to put into reality.

Other times the songs come from playing around and getting a sound that a melody can come from.

I always write the music first, then lyrics to fit the melody in my head. This makes for lyrics that do not usually fit the "standard" criteria for lyricism.

I like to write songs that have at least a couple voices in harmony.

When I first started writing, an older guy gave me this advice:

1. Find a song you like.
2. Rewrite the words.
3. Rewrite the music.

That helped until I could find my own voice as a writer.

how do you write songs

This might sound crazy, but I have written some songs in front of a mirror, not looking at myself, but the guitar while I`m playing. It sometimes can give you ideas. One example of a song I wrote using this technique , When I look in the mirror,I see a lonely man,I don`t recognize him,but should I despise him,he`s done nothing wrong to me. That was one of my first attempt at writing, and it wasn`t all that great. But it did give me a starting point. There were alot more words to the song, that was just an example. Another way I use to write is turn off all the lights, sit there and clear your mind, and see what happens.Sometimes you come up with some good stuff, sometimes you don`t. An example of what I came up with using that techniqe is , You and I ,have been friends for quite some time, we need our sapce. You go your way ,I`ll go mine we`ll find our place. Another way is to sit in your house ,look out the window, and watch what`s going on outside, and write about what you see,or feel.Short example (it was winter) slipping and sliding on water and ice ,a little bit of summer sure would be nice.Sitting here thinking of friends far away, sitting on beaches enjoying the day. Those are just a few things that have given me ideas for songs,I admit some of them aren`t very good. But it is a way to get you thinking and writing. There`s always the write what you have experienced way to go too.Example - I can`t remember the verses right off hand for this song but the chorus was what made you change ,I don`t understand it,we`ve known eachother since we were 4 or 5 ,what made you change I don`t understand it,sometimes I feel like I`m not alive ,not alive etc. etc.I was writing that about a childhood friend ,another way I get ideas is to go sit on a beach and see what happens when I start playing.Sometimes not much, other times you come up with something decent.Last week I turned on my drum machine and got a decent beat going and came up with a song really quickly. There`s a million ways to get inspired ,just try different things and you will find what works for you.

There are so many different ways to write songs, and many are covered here already, If it hasnt been said already, dont try to force yourself to write a song. You have to be in the mood. I like to get the worst over first. Program the drums. Then I just start playing rhythm over them until I find something interesting. Then I work on the chorus and changes and it all flows from there. Then the bass, etc.... I might have lyrics, and I will try some to see if they fit or I will add lib some vocals until I find a theme, etc. I like to surprise myself anymore...Its funner that way. I like to start out without any Idea of what Im going to do.....
