One last thing...I do a lot of mobile recording...DJL, that flight case looks great, but if I don't have the original boxes, foam, etc, what would you recommend to keep the mics from moving around in there while I'm carrying it?

The aluminum case that is available from Lowes has foam in it that you can pull out to custom fit your mics. Do a search and see if you can dig up the old threads that talked about them. If you can't find one, Ill post a picture of mine but I know there are some threads discussing this exact topic somwhere.

Now, that's good advice and a creative solution!
Thanks... but it was someone else's creative solution... I can't remember who told me about the cases, but the cases have worked very well for me... so I'm passing on the good idea.

The dividers that come with the case hold the mics in place... put the mics in a plastic ziplock type bags along with some silica gel packets and then put them into the mic pouches and place them into the aluminum case.

When would you guys actually store away these mic's? Whenever they are not in use?

I've just got my mics sitting beside my mixer because it's so handy whenever i want to record, i just switch on the mixer and comp and record away.

I'm not that afraid of physically damaging them, but would the mic's actually get damaged by the surrounding environment (bedroom)?

It depends on the conditions in your bedroom, mainly humidity and dust. If you're in a dry location, just throw a plastic bag over the mic on its stand, leaving the bottom open.

If there is high humidity, you're better off keeping them in a sealed container (bag, box, case, etc.) with silica gel. You can't keep silica gel in an open container - it absorbs the circulating atmospheric moisture in a short time, and becomes useless (until dried out.)

That's my situation too, I just have all of my keyboards / guitars / mics in my bedroom, and it could get quite humid in the morning if I don't leave my window open at night. Is the temperature change a big deal for the mics? I have also got the 991/990 package...bought at ebay for $80, couldn't resist. ;)

Just a little disclaimer when Drying Silica bags in oven.
Most Co. use glue to hold three sides of the bag together.
You'll have to tape or re-glue after the oven trick.
No big deal, unless you grab one off the oven sheet and little pellets go everywhere.

There still might be someone that uses cloth bags with sown sides. Dunno? Haven't checked into it in several years.

Just for the record... I've dried a ton of silica gel packets in the oven without any problems like that... but, I guess there is always a chance of a first time. Another way to dry out the silica gel packets is with a low wattage light bulb.

The best thing ive found is to use felt bags like a large crown royal bag slide it over the mount and every thing with a small bag of dessicant inside , felt seems to have a natural abillity to block and repel moisture , for a test just try to wipe up some water with a felt rag ,
