How do you stop tape rubbing on Tascam 38

I just got Tascam 38. Got here in one piece and seems to be in excellent working order just a slight rubbing on the tape reel. I don't have a manual for it yet. I was wondering if anyone know how to adjust tape wheel so there's no rubbing? I know my old teac 4 track deck had a screw on the pad to do this but I don't see anything here.

The reel table's height can be adjusted internally, below the surface level of the top plate which must be removed to get at the set-screw adjustments to raise or lower the reel table.

If you are not scared by doing some DIY repair procedures, it is a fixable problem to solve and having the service manual would also be a good asset to have as it will step you through the procedures of maintaining the 38 overall.

TASCAM does still sell the manual and it goes for about 30 bucks in the States.

Cheers! :)

this might be a gross adjustment, but I've seen flanges that were just bent or warped shaped, and bending them back into shape solved that problem. If your "new" reel is rubbing the deck, that's a little more drastic, but I always used flanges and hubs rather than assembled reels, and sometimes that tape coming off the reel might have made an objectiionable sound...aka scraping!! .

Thanks!

The rubbing is not against the machine, just the tape to the reel. One slight hit each rotation.

I tend to think it is the reel table. I think it needs to be raised a little but it could be either of those things. I didn't think of checking to see if the reel was warped. I'm not afraid of opening it up either.

I'm going to check it out. I let you know what it was. Thanks

Check with a tape loaded and look at the right tension-roller if the tape is centered on the groove.
Also the tape should be in the center of the take-up reel.
Adjustment of the reel-table is not difficult, let me know if you need any help. :)
