I've got this cheap Squire P-Bass (with one pickup), and it always it's always seems to produce a really growl-ly or throaty sound if I don't turn the tone know down almost all the way. Is this what they do to get that deep sound with little finger noise?

Also, does reggae use much of an effect on bass or is it pretty clean?

Thanks!

Wherever pickup you play closest to, turn up, and the other pickup down.

Turn your treble down, reggae has very bassy bass tones.

P.S. definitely compress it, but other then that, little or no effects.

Ow Reggae, nice.

A P-bass is the bass of choice when you want to make reggae, that tone knoeb is suppose to be closed.
I recommend that you string the with flatwound strings. They give you that phat yep vibrant sound without highs. Then you can decide if you want the tone open or closed.
No effects needed. Compression, EQ (boost bass!).
