That would be a valid reply if you had managed to work "nazi" into your response somehow. Please try again.

Thank you.

I edited the post. I get half the credit... :D

I'll second that.
I would probably play it with my thumb, as that is how I learned to play a G, with my thumb wrapped over, and muting the A string. Of course, my playing sucks ass, so...... :o

Hopefully by the end of this thread we will all be slinging insults and comparing each other to Hitler. :D
Why don't you go polish your Jack Boots with that half-o-mustache you goose stepping, genocidal, swastika wearing, Stormtrooper SOB!.... how was that? :D

I don't have a guitar in front of me, but if I absolutely had to play that chord on an electric, I'd probably put middle finger on E string and barre the rest with ring finger.

Or maybe index finger on E string, but definitely barre the rest with middle finger.

I'll try tonight.

Does this make me a freak...

It's starting to feel like the Cave in here already!

The -x-- is really just the E string duplicated - isn't going to gain you much anyway, and will just get in the way while moving around. It is essentially a "non-portable" chord.

The following will give you the same thing, it's legit, can be grabbed in a single barre, and is portable:

Am
-5--
-5--
-5--
-5--
-7--
-5--

i.e. you just barre across the 5th fret, and clamp down the A string on the 7th fret with any convenient finger.

oooh, doubling the 5th-that is sooo rock 'n roll. I would double the 3rd but then again I'm a masochistic classical guitarist.
:)

-5--
-5--
-5--
-5--
-3--
-5--

And yes, it can be done because I just did it. I barred the D and G strings with my 3rd finger and the B and high E strings with my pinky and fretted the low A on the E string with my middle finger.

You are all a bunch of guitar playing, chord fingering, note picking "NAZI'S" :D

i say thumb it. i thumb it all the time. try this as the next chord:

x
6
5
4
5
x

That should be a very standard fingering. It's your run-of-the-mill D7#9 chord. If anyone fingers that differently that (from low to high) 2-1-3-4, I'd be very surprised.

I'm suprised to see how many people don't seem to finger this m7 form the "standard" way, 2nd finger on the E string, third finger on the rest. It is actually a very easy form, especially if you don't worry too much about the high A on the first string. (That's why it's "standard.")

Putting the 5th in (7th fret on the fifth string) makes it pretty muddy and it's way harder to move around and be funky with, in my experience. It also doubles the fifth which isn't all that wonderful-sounding.

Thanks Al - I knew someone else would do it this way! I am not an animal.. I am a human being..... :o

Eh? D isn't in Am7. A, C, E, and G are. So what you could do is this:
e|-5-
B|-5-
G|-5-
D|-5-
A|-x-
E|-0-

which is the chord in 2nd inversion. Or you can grow another finger beyond your pinky. Nazi.

This thread rocks! I've learned how to to use 4 out of 5 fingers on my left hand. :D

You're not listening, Himmler! You can use your thumb and the nubbin growing next to your pinky. By now you should be able to use 6 out of the 5 fingers on that hand.

This is what I was saying (see my post very early on).
