How do they get that vocal effect???

After listening to a few cds, trying to find interesting things to throw on my upcoming album, I noticed a nice effect on my Offspring and POD cds. It's kind of a suttle (to your average listeners) effect that really gives a nice coat to the vocals and elimates the boxy sound that some recordings have. Any ideas how this is done?

Do you mean double tracking the vocals? I know The Offspring do that a lot.

How about a good mic, with good placement, in a nicely treated room, with an even nicer Engineer, that should Eliminate the boxiness.

What to do is NOT to use a small room unless it is really well treated (padded). Cause using a small room is what produces that echoey, boxy sound believe it or not. Why not use a big room, cause when recording vocals the singer will usually be pretty close to the mic anyway, making room ambience almost unaudible.
Using a vocal distorter gives a vocal alot of depth with the right settings and can really make the vocal stand out from the mix without overpowering the mix, but too much distortion and it can sound good , but not real if you know what i mean. (MUSE)
If you dont have a vocal enhancer(distorter) then use compression wiseley. This will broaden the vocal and give more depth and smoothness to the sound.
