How do these drums sound?

How does this drum recording sound? I'm using a D112 on kick, SM58 on snare, and two SM57s as overheads (strange, I know.).

Does the overall recording need to be somewhat louder?

Thanks for any comments/suggestions.

The kick sounds good! I don't think the 57s for overheads are working, though. Its just not crisp enough. It also sounds to me like a pretty live room, but the drums are on shag carpet. Would this be correct? If it is, you might improve the sounds by setting the snare stand on something hard and flat, so the bottom head gets refected back to the overheads. I would also recommend getting a couple condensers for the overheads,

Sounds like the kit is pretty well tuned. Good playing.

I did apply some light reverb to all the tracks. What about miking the bottom of the snare? Though placing something reflective under the snare would be cheaper than purchasing another mic. Any recommendations for overhead mics? My budget is the best bang for the buck. Thanks!

I recommend MXL 603s for overheads, though on a tighter budget, there are alternatives but you won't get totally great sound quality. The CAD GLX 1200's are suppose to be pretty good. Maybe as good as the 603. You can get a pair on eBay for $118.00. Then you could move your 57's down as tom mics.

I would wait and see how the kit sounds with condensers before micing the bottom head. Although almost any mic will work underneath as its a pretty limited frequency range. Just make sure if you mic the bottom head, reverse the phase of the mic. (Not always neccessary. Listen first and decide.)

Wierd, it should be working.

definitly look for some small diaphragm condensors. The only way to make it sound really full is to boost the shit out of the high end, and thats generally not a good way to go about it. I have used 2 overheads, a mic in the kick, and a mic on the bottom of the snare (not pointing straight up, actually pointing more at the drummers nuts) and liked the sound alot. It makes the snare alot crisper, escpecially if you boost around 4 - 8 khz a little.

Is that the secret to getting a ballsy snare tone?

You could also just throw a drum head under the snare stand and that will reflect the sound back up, the same for floor toms. :D

Kick could sound better if you adjusted the placement, it needs more low end.

Snare drum sound nasty, doesn't sound tuned properly. sm57s are brillaint for OH but they can and have worked.

A thought. Just a thought.....
Lose the sm-58. Use one sm-57 on the snare and one as an overhead. And try hitting and kicking harder. You need to bring out more tone from the drums for the mics. You may have to readjust your levels. Get them good and hot but don't let them peak. See how that sounds.

Cheers

I actually thought there was too much low end on the kick. Really depends on what it all sounds like when other stuff gets mixed in. The 57's could work with some eq tweaks.
