How do the pros get that "modern" metal tone?

How does shit like that become promoted/popular???
It's like a mash up of corny Euro Pop, Metal, R&B and a little old-school New Wave (the bad stuff - Flock of Seagulls).

Is it just about finding a couple of young teenagers with some dopey haircut and those slim jeans...and then selling it to the millions of totally mindless teenage girls who never even listen to the music...
...they just SCREAM!!!! :D

Yeah those teens at the mall think they're real hard core though. Like the ones who wear the baggy pans with all the chains and shit strung thought them. I sometimes wonder what they're thinking... lol

They don't wear trhat shit anymore around here. That stuff is so 2000. It's all Hot-Topic skinny jeans, Vans, and bieber haircuts now.

Has this ever not been the recipe for pop music? This is just the latest wave of effeminate boy bands.

@OP - the emo-pop-metal guitar sound is an (old) POD with the gain too high and a sharp lowpass to eliminate the fizz - maybe a wide bell bump around 5-7 K if the lowpass makes them sound too dark. Stack up a few takes on each side, scoop the mids, do some parametric sweeps. Edit (quantize) the performance to impossible perfection. Done. The modern metal guitar sound was covered (exactly right) in Greg's first post.

edit: This is a serious reply, to be clear. Kinda uninspiring and seems like I'm joking, but that's really how it's done in both cases. :(

I like the Amplitube Plugins. I have the whole collection and you can get just about any sound you want. If you're like me and you don't have the money to buy a few really nice 2 or 3 thousand dollar tube amps to be able to get a variety of tones it's a nice soultion. Of course the demo versions suck and you might not like them at all. I really like the Fender and Ampeg plugins although I don't normally work on music that uses most of the plugins. It's still fun having so many different tones to play with. I would love to have 5 or 6 different tube amps though :D

Personally, i like to think in the opposite direction when it comes to amp sims (or real amps, for that matter). I'll rather have a few GOOD sounding amps and cabs, which i know inside out, instead of a bunch of "options", which i don't know how to get the best out of. I have Guitar Rig 4, and it's more "fun" than productive. Too much options makes me, at least, less productive.

Anyway, i have serious problems making GR4 less noisy than ANY real amp i have ever tried. I don't think the versatility weighs up for the time consuming tinkering you need to do for it to be adequate.

Also, i agree with all you core-haters! My last discovery in the dreaded *-core genre is softcore. And I thought I was looking for some good ol' videos! :D

haha i read that when i first started recording, didn't really pay attention too much to it then put reading it on the backburner. I'll take another look at it

I usually don't judge my clients but... ugh
 
Keep it as it is. If it sounds Lo-Fi, that means it's TRUE METAL. The band can be generic and retain any street cred they may have.

I dunno, I think the same could be said about any form of music to be honest.... Blues, rock, classical and jazz all sound contrived and formulaic to people who dont like or appreciate those styles of music! Fact is, if you dont like metal or "core" you dont have to listen to it, its not like its forced down your throat the same way mainstream pop music is. Ive never understood some peoples obsession with slagging off modern metal (or "core")bands, its not my thing personally, but I dont feel the need to jump up on my high horse whenever its mentioned. Live and let live I say.
 
For something punchier in a more natural way, just try double tracking or even triple or quadruple tracking the guitars, but each time you do it change something about whether its changing out a mic or two, changing the EQ, etc etc and then play with panning to give it a fuller sound. This will probably help alot with what you are trying to do. The thing is too, referring to deathcore bands as your reference of "punchy" probably means that their music is just meant to be loud for the sake of being loud (and probably compressed and limited/maximized beyond belief) so that may not be a good basis to define your desire for punchiness in the first place.

Pft. I'm not in the closet. I have no problems saying I like heavy music and dislike punk (well I do like stuff out of the 80s). I just don't like anything linked in this thread minus the carcass link posted above (which is what I think of when someone says hardcore music).

The techno infused garbage that has been put out in the past few years is just terrible plain and simple.

I've gotten over what other people think of the music I like. In the end we won't see eye to eye because I probably think the stuff they love is crap as well.
