How do live app SDC Shures compare with stuff like MXL 603's

So if I'm going to record some drums, and I have some Shure SM 81's, what would that sound like compared to getting a matched pair of MXL 603's? On the Shure web page it has their SDC's under the recording section, but I think I've only seen them used in live applications. But, since things like MXL 603's or Studio Project C4's are budget recording SDC's I was wondering which would be more advantageous to use (I'm talking OH's of course). Thanks for your help!

i have a feeling the shures will smoke both the mxl and sp mics combined.

SM81s are used in studios all the time. I don't know how they rate vs. the MXLs and SPs as I've never used those.

this is a quote from a thread i was looking at earlier about the mxl 993 as an over heard and someone mentioned the sm 81.

"I've used Earthworks and had a pair of Shure SM81's, and I prefer the 603's for the Overheads - there's just something about them that I really like.

Tim"

i myself would go and use those sm 81's, but dont let people tell you that the mxls are worse cause some people do like them better.

Any mic can theoretically be used both live and in the studio. That being said, SOME mics don't trasfer from or to the stage very well. SDC's generally work well in both places. It's LDC's that don't move to the stage very well. I'm not sure what it is about them but I've never been able to get them to work on stage, but they're fantastic in the studio.

If you like your 81's I'd say use em...We use 57's on stage and in the studio for snare and guitars, we use MD421's for Toms in both places... just cause it's used live doesn't mean it can't get used in the studio...

i do FoH in a club thats got a pile of 81s. i brought a couple and used em as oh instead of my 603s. more detail, less sizzly high (but stil pretty bright mics). liked em better than the 603s but not as much as akg 451s.

A mic is a mic. The reason why some are preferred for live work usually boils down to three things:

1. Durability

2. Resistance to picking up foot traffic noise and unwanted sounds.

3. Unobtrusive installation.

Big ol LDCs tend to fall down on all three factors.
