How do I set up a xlr mic?

Hi, I'm planning on getting a xlr mic in the future and what will I need to be able to hook it up to my computer so I can use it? Do I just hook the xlr into a firewire audio interface and then hook that into the firewire input on my mac? Also, why are there so many channels on a audio interface?

Because interfaces are designed to do a number of things, including, sometimes, to record more than one instrument at a time.
 
Because most folks interested in recording professional audio typically need more than one channel. Baring voice over type stuff, but there are interfaces for either. If you only need one channel, there's the M-Audio Fast Track Pro, and the Mbox mini, and other options out there. Personally, I kind of find mono audio annoying. But I guess it depends on how many speakers you're piping it out of, and how many of your ears still exist and/or work.

What do you mean by mono audio annoying? Also, what are studio monitors for?

Do the mboxes support phantom power?

I do most of my stuff in stereo at the point of capture. It's just odd to hear mono to me. No spacial information to accurately ID where the sound was relative to the mic(s).

Seriously. You'll just waste money or give up in frustration otherwise.
