How do I hook it all up??

Whats the best RAP MIC??!
Hey guys. I am trying to figure out how to hook up the gear I am going to be purchasing soon. My system chain will look like this

Hp dv8t (laptop)-->fp10-->Apogee Rosetta 800, Great River MP-2NV-->KSM44 and other mics

So my question is, how do I hook all this up to my laptop. I don't have a PCI port so I am not sure how the Apogee would connect to my pc. Do i need to use the firewire on the fp10 as a shell, and then bypass the converters and pre amps of the fp10? Thanks for the help guys and god bless!:)
 
PS. I am not some scrub that doesn't deserve the gear because i don't know how to set it up. I just have never worked with an external converter rather than an interface. just saying lol because i dont want anyone to hold it against me...i understand all the hook ups, i just dont know how it would all connect to my computer, considering it is a laptop without a PCI port

The whole thing I am confused about though is how can I use that with my laptop. I do not have a pci port on here so i have no idea where to plug that into?
 
You can get firewire cards that go into a laptop's PCMCIA or Expresscard slot.

Get a Belkin or SIIG card (they're not expensive) and make SURE it has TexasInstruments firewire chips. You dont want anything else if you're dealing with audio or video....)
 
A lot of laptops come with fire wire ports now, they're the micro ports that look more like a mini usb port... the actual fire wire card for the 800 is installed into the 800.

And Tim's suggestion works if your laptop doesn't support fire wire...

WHat really confuses me is that the FP10 is a fire wire interface... how are you connecting that to the laptop?
 
Yup, look around the case and READ THE MANUAL.

The HP site lists the HP DV8T as having a Firewire port.

You will want to check in the System Control Panel > Device Manager to see what type of firewire chipset it has - you'll see a listing for IEE-1394 (thats firewire). If it says Texas Instruments you'll be fine, but anything else you may not work properly with all interfaces.

Does not say that it has a PCMCIA or Expresscard slot so you may be in trouble if the firewire chipset is not compatible.

(In the future, NEVER buy anything that doesnt have TI firewire chips if you're doing audio or video...)
 
Hey guys. I appreciate the help, I really do. My laptop has one of those smaller firewire ports. Thats how I currently hook up my firepod. I had to go into the drivers and change it from the current one to LEGACY, in order to get my FP10 to work. Now though it all works perfectly. This would remain the case if I just added an external mic pre and converter to the equation, no? Would I go converter and GR MP Nv2 mic pre into the firepod and then the firepod into my pc like usual? This would bypass the cruddy fp10 electronics I would assume! Oh, so I connect my monitors, my cans, and the GR to the Rosetta 800? I guess I have to fork out money for the firewire card in it huh? :(:mad:
 
NOTE: Just looked and my computer does have a PCIE port, which is great. Also, if you could just make a list of the cables I would need, it would be much obliged as I am new to "AES" cables and such. I need to connect to monitors, my headphones, the mic pre, and the Apogee. Thankss guys
