How do I get the "punch" that a commercial recording has?

Did anyone address that he is using a multi-band with both L2 and L316 together?

If you like the final mix and don't wanna shell out for pro mastering just hit it with a touch of L2 enough to bring up the level without killing the punch and be done with it.

If you require professional results hire a professional. With regards to recording I can see your point regarding the websites name, thats fair. However, mastering is rarely going to be anything better than guess work when done at home and this post resides in the mastering section, no ?

Sometimes home equipment/acoustics will never be able to present punch whether it is there or not.
There are rare exceptions to the rule but I think it is fair to say, most home recordings are not excellent. Good recordings are possible, but recording excellence rarely occurs outside the confines of a professional studio with the right kit and a very good engineer.

lol @ all these online mastering "pros" chiming in with their spam, telling people to hire "professionals".

WTF is "recording excellence" anyway? Oh yeah, I know, it's totally subjective.

I recommend the Waves plugins especially the multiband compressor - get your mix good - decrease the bass below 50Hz and and a tiny spike that suits the kik near 60-100 Hz.

(Oh geez, here we go...)

LOL! You are not in the category of assholes that present themselves as professionals man. You are real. Nothing but respect for you from here. :D

I am concerned about S&S realty, oops, mastering, as he has presents his ego first.

Yeah MM seems like a legit dude who graciously shares his expertise. Waltz too. They've been here for a while and have credibility. Nothing but respect from me. The others......maybe not so much.

Very good question!
My 2 cents.
Punch is not achieved my squishing.
I have been referencing an hiphop song that I ve mixing for the last 2 weeks against a standard of the industry.
I tried everything... I mean everything.

Then for the hell of it. instead of compression the low end with my multibandcompressor. I decided to let it be... Or even expend it a tad...
And there was the punch.
It breaths.
And the kick knocks my head off...
that s punch.

i'm sure this reply would seem rather simplistic but when i need an extra "punch" i run the final mix through a 1970s solid state receiver and push the big silver "compression" button.

First to address the para ell comp, good for drums, or a kick. Not for mastering, whats to para ell??? As few said if you dont want to acquire a Mast Eng and go bout it a simple way.
1.) Comp (SSL Buss Comp) A lil comp
2.) EQ - a mastering EQ (UAD - Manley Passive, PSP Mastering EQ) boost/cut to taste/hears
3.) Multiband - (Waves - LinMB/C4/C6, UAD - Precision Multiband, Logic - Multipressor) Balance your mix lows, mids, highs.
4.) Limiter - (Waves - L2) once music is fully balanced limiter the audio and bring down the Threshold till it comes "CLOSE" to 0 not slammming it!!I hate loud masters! quiet but heard wins in my wars.

FLIPSIDE: I use parallel compression quite often. Even before it was cool.
Multiband
FLIPSIDE: I think I used a maul-the-band compressor on one mix, on one project, in the last year. Very few mastering engineers I know use MBC's unless something is so messed up (and non-re-mixable), that nothing else will work.

Just showing another side --
