oh yea...or you can do what 7string said...that will work just fine as well...

I have a Line 6 amp modeler lying around. I've never gotten a satisfying sound out it.

Recently, I tried tracking direct from my TubeWorks Rt-922 preamp ($120 on evilBay), and it is surprisingly good. A bit of delay, a dash of reverb and it almost as good as being there. ;)

I don't think any of the bands mentioned have any of those things. Nobody mentioned that all of those bands have the shit compressed out of the guitars.

Use creamy milky compressor with outputs for many cd quality.

(uhh..sorry. That's just the way the question hit me.)

Oh, Jesus.

This thread is so embarrassing to read. Did I really tell someone that it's okay to use a POD?

Eye uy uy

(slaps fist against forehead. Hard)

Interesting how your ears change with time. I'm curious, what made you change your mind about recording with a POD? Were you still in the "honeymoon phase" at that point in time? After spending some time critically listening did you realize a POD didn't measure up to a nice mic'd amp?

I haven't used a POD much, but I do have a V-amp 2 that I use as a practice amp. The only recording I do with it are scratch tracks and rough ideas. I haven't heard an amp modeller that sounds as good to my ears as a 57 or MD421 on my Budda Superdrive.

I'm almost thinking my response may have been kind of half-joking. I've never really known myself to favor the POD much. And it doesn't take golden ears or a dozen critical listens or anything to figure out that amp modelers basically suck. Come to think of it, I was probably just trying to give Bluebear shit or something. Whatever it is, it concerns me greatly. :D Although I suppose whatever it was I grew out of quickly enough.

Step 4 --- put the guitar/amp/player in a great sounding room
Step 5 --- put the right mic in front of the amp
Step 6 --- attach the mic to a great mic pre
Step 7 --- attach the pre to a great recorder
Step 8 --- get an experienced engineer behind the board to mix it

Simple!

OK, without going through steps 1-8, how else can I do it?

I probably don't have any of the great stuff... but here's how I got these guitar tones... really nice sounding thick and warm distorted guitar can be tough to capture and not implying I've achieved that with my clips... from the so called experts around, you'll get all but real usuable practical specifics and few actual clips of their work... they seem to forget this is HOME RECORDING...

Whoa... this is an old thread! Nice, Sonixx... I'm digging the Killswitch Engage. I especially like the center guitar doing the lead lick. Great tone.

I have something to contribute.... check out this tone I got recently.... it's a monster.

Here's how it was done-

Guitar: Ibanez RG 520 (stock pickups)
Amp: Bogner Uberschall (with a scooped-mids type setting, with the exception of the lows turned WAY down, at about 10:00)
Cabs: Bogner Ubercab (Celestion Vintage 30s and 75s) and Avatar custom cab (with Celestion G12H80s)
Mic: Sm57
Pre: Joemeek MQ3

4 tracks (all seperate takes), 2 panned right and 2 panned left.

Right side....
Track 1: Vintage 30, mic dead center of speaker cone, then pointed up towards an inch from the edge of the speaker. About half an inch from the grill cloth.
Track 2: G12H80, mic an inch off the dustcap, then pulled back about a foot.

Left side....
Track 3: Vintage 30, same mic position as Track 2.
Track 4: G12H80, mic on the edge of the dustcap, then pointed away from it just a bit to take away some of the harsh hi-end. About an inch off the grill cover.

Also, in a previous post, I mentioned something about an album. We finished that about 2 years ago, haha! I think I've posted links here and there, but if you haven't heard it and are curious, here it is:

http://www.myspace.com/psychostick

Guitars on that one were done using the POD and a bag o' tricks. Our next albums gonna sound way better, though... it will sound more like the clip I just posted.

UberGawkman I've heard your clip before... just excellent... I love Uber's. The guitarist in my son's band has one... thanks for sharing the settings...

UberGawkman: That tone setting with the Uberschall sounds killer. Too bad I'd have to sell my first born to get a hold of an amp like that. I own a Dual Rectifier and am going to use your settings kinda as a guideline. Also, PyschoStick rules my friend! I actually knew about you guys before I even joined up here. Coming from SLC, Utah (a place with TONS of hardcore kids), ABCDeath was a godsend!
