How bad does this hurt my signal?

Guitar/Bass into J-Station @ 24/44 analogue out into SB live analogue in @ 16/48 which is recorded in Cakewalk Guitat Tracks 2 which only supports 16/44. Is this really screwing up my signal?
I don't really understand the implacations of D/A - A/D converting.

Your SB live is going to bring it in at the sample rate that the software specifies up to it's hardware limits. In your case it is bringing it in at 16/44. The only DAC that occurs is at the input stage where the analog jack is converted to digital.

The SB itself is your weakest link. You are not hurting the signal anymore than the SB hurts it itself ;)
 
Thanks for the info - I think in general I am ok with 16 bit recording. Im not doing anything professional - I am trying to make demos that sound good to me and my friends. I dont have any near feild monitors yet, I just hope that what I am recording will be able to be mixed decent when I have monitors.
 
Any suggestions for monitors for the "not so professional on a budget"?
 
I wish I could offer some advice on monitors as I am in dire need of those myself. But, until you get some you can still get some "passable" results with your multimedia speakers. The key is to "learn" them. Record and mix something. When you think it sounds good, post it in the mix forum. I've gotten some pretty sound advice from people with far better ears and experience than I have. It has helped me "learn" more about what to expect from my two sets of multimedia speakers among other things. Hopefully, when I finally do get a set of real monitors I will know more how to use them. Good luck!
