How are we storing and caring for our mics?

Can you please explain the importance of storing with dessicant? Thanks.

...keeps moisture from condensing on the diaphragm, a cause of hum and noise. If the metal on your mics is rusting, you need to seriously reconsider your storage environment.

For me, ditto with the aluminum cases (Lowe's and HomeDepot must have found out how popular they are with musicians---the price went up $5 in the last year), and ditto with individual ziplocs & dessicant, preventing storage in contact with spongy foam (like, don't store your SP B1 mics with the windscreens on), even if that was the material inside the manufacturer's case.

I've got a few Road Ready cases for whatever mics didn't come with flight cases or wooden boxes. All packed w/ dessicant. No mics get left out, except my talkback mic, which is expendable.-Richie

I actually dont trust the wooden boxes...are they sealed?

That depends on the boxes. B.L.U.E. Kiwi/Neumann KM184 - no problem. Virtually airtight. B.L.U.E. bird-cheap plywood, not so good. But- the studio is kept pretty dry anyway, so the boxes mostly keep dust off the mics. When humidity is really high, I run a dehumidifier. It's a pain, though, because I have to keep the mics dry and the guitars wet. Everything is a compromise.-Richie

Thanks for the link. Lots of info there, too. The description of problems using silica made me think that's why dessicant was recommended/used, above. Is it true that it has qualities that make it a better candidate for storing with condenser mic's, or is it just coincidence, and not necessarily because it's better?

I store mine on a stand and take care of them by not using them for hammers.
