horn mics.

Hi I am going to record my band in a couple weeks,AH!!!! I'll be engineer and guitar player. Yeah thats my first mistake trying to do both but,I would like your thoughts on some mics for the horns, sax, trombone ,trumpets. I have considered RE20, Senn 421, AT4050, 4033. I have thought of my AKG C3000B. I want to get a great horn sound as possible without going nutty and spending tons of $$$. Your ideas ? Jim
 
That Is A Pretty Tough Call

All you listed are some good choices... Before I say anything though, what mics do you already own?

I have an AKG C3000B OF WHICH i'M NOT sur how much I like, an old Sennheiser 421,'bout 1968. Other typical ,57,58, sure BG 4.1. rest are drum mics for toms and such.Thanks Jim
 
Besides You Already Having It

See how you like the 421. It is known for being a good canidate for horns. If you don't end-up liking it, then maybe try to describe what you didn't like about it and that might point you or us into the right direction for recommendation.
 
one more thought

Thanks R E . Whatever I settle on I need to but about 2 more 'caUSE I haVE a 4 piece horn section. When micing the horns,I was thinking about micing each horn ,then 2 mics in front of the horn section about 5 feet away to get an emsemble kind of sound. I s this a good idea or will this muddy up the sound? Thanks Jim
 
I assume this will be an overdub then?

I then suggest you use dynamics for each horn and large diaphragm condensers for you stereo pairs.

Maybe use the 421 you have and buy 2 other used 421s (don't buy the new ones) for the horn, trumpet, and sax, and an RE20 or RE-27 for the trombone (new or used)? And maybe a pair of 4033s as your stereo pair?

That'd leave with a VERY NICE and versatile mic cabinet too!

Is that "spending tons of $$$"?

you're in pretty good shape Jim. If the horn section is not THE focal point of your recording, you may only need one more dynamic and then a nice pair of condensers. 421's are great mics, but for individual mics within a section you MIGHT be perfectly happy using your Shures. 3 or 4 421's would be great, but you may not need to put your money there. Take your 421, 57, 58, and add one more (maybe an RE-20) and try different combinations to see what sounds best.

So if you get just one more 421 or an RE-20, you'll have a bit more for your pair of condensers. :>

Saxman 72, I'm thinking of going with maybe a couple used 421's and re20's. They seem very versitile. Horns are not the focus as you said. You know, for this type a session ,I've used 57's and gotten away with it just fine. I may cheapin out and put the $$$ now into a CD mastering setup. Thanks for input,Jim
