Help me get my studio

EDITED MADE SHORTER: HELP A BROTHA OUT MANG!

could be anything from dape to digital workstation to a sound card and some mics, mixers ect.

looking to get a home studio started. What do you folks think I need for what I'm going for. Please help with idears. I got between 3-400 to spend on this and am hoping for quality but maybe a little cheaper stuff than real high end.
If you don't got time to read just scroll down and listen to the production sound of the example given because that is what I am going for. A barebones, powerfull, acoustic, sound.

I am not going for a overproduced trashville sound because I am a huge fan of old time music. Like doc watson, dock boggs, roscoe holcomb, tommy jarrell, uncle dave macon and all that good stuff. Just a brutal display of raw emotion and talent. That's what I want I also love the melodies of folks like the louvin brothers, carter family and the stanley brothers. From time to time i'll throw down so to speak and kick down about an octave or so and sing some blues. Like old mississippi delta stuff: charley patton, bukka white, son house.

So basically I want to get some equipment that will last me awhile, clear it all up (sound wise), let all the notes and tones be heard as they should (not all muddled and underwater like as with the built in, half duplex, mic-in-monitor I have now)maybe even something to bring stuff that is there out more or give my recordings a little ooomph. I am pretty confident with myself and musical abilities and I am always learning and building on what I already have. I write songs, know chords, can make up melodies or pick em out of a song when needed. So I am damn confident I could sit down and record a song with vocals and guitar. Then make a harmonica part for it and banjo part after that. I know what I would need to do. Just don't have the equipment.

here is an example of a modern musician that fits the basic type of sound I am going for. The only differance is its almost always just him, guitar and voice. Granted I will be like that on some of the songs on others their will be an assortment of banjos, harmonicas, guitars and vocals. I would like to keep this same type of sound

Equipment-wise, it sounds like you've got the right ideas... I haven't listened to any of your musical examples so I can't offer any assistance to guide you toward their sound....

I did notice the absence of any recording software in your list tho...?

looking for something with good sound quality and easy to use. maybe some effects/limiters/compressors or something but I think I could get those elsewhere by themselves and use them with most good software (right?)

Tascam US-428
I have just seen this, maybe it would kill the whole sound card idea?
anyone have experience with it? How does the sound quality of it hold up to a good sound card like emu 0404. Could I connect a preamp to it? would I need to go comp -428-mixer-preamp-mic? or would the mixer even be needed? There may be occasions when I will record an instrument and vocals at the same time on different mics is why I ask. Anything else about this anyone knows that would be usefull?

Uh, let's see.... If you get a digital multitracker, you don't need to connect it as part of your signal chain into your pc. Get a mixer. You never know when it will come in handy. A lot of people recommend the Yamaha MG series. Good pre amps, and it's pretty quiet. You can go the soundcard route with the mixer, and it'll do just fine. If you go the digital mutitracker route, get one that has a usb out, and you can transfer your tracks to your pc and mix them there.

Here's a link to some free and demo programs to look at. I am not going to recommend any one program, you can look at all of them and decide which one you like...
