Nature of Force
Hey guys

I have a little problem. I just bought M-Audio BX5A Monitors and I don't know how to hook them up :o

Do I connect them to my mixer or my sound card? I want to hear the sounds from my computer, but I'm not sure if it goes:

Soundcard Line Out -> Y Cable -> Monitors

or

Soundcard Line Out -> RCA Cable -> CD/Tape in on Behringer Xenyx 1202 Mixer -> Control Room Out -> Monitors

I'd rather use the first method :p Will that work?

Either way will work. I prefer to have my monitors hooked up through the mixer for a couple of reasons.

One is that you can route other sources through the monitors without having to go through the computer

The other is that the mixer gives you a hardware volume control. Before I got my mixer, I had on more than one occasion, accidentally started media player with the volume at full blast  - I was so startled that the only thing I could think of doing to keep from destroying the monitors and my hearing was to power off the monitors

I've only used passive monitors, but the amp is shot now. :(

There isn't One Right Way to do it. Whatever patching method suits your needs is what you should do.

I want to hear the sounds from my computer, but I'm not sure if it goes:

Soundcard Line Out -> Y Cable -> Monitors

Why would you use a Y-cable? Just go from the left output to the left monitor and from the right output to the right monitor.

[Edit] Okay, wait a minute, you mean you are using the factory sound card? Then you may need a Y-cable. But what you really need is a proper audio interface.

or

Soundcard Line Out -> RCA Cable -> CD/Tape in on Behringer Xenyx 1202 Mixer -> Control Room Out -> Monitors

You can do that, and no, it won't feed back if you only press the "CD/Tape to Ctrl".

I'd rather use the first method :p Will that work?

Why not just try it?

Alright thanks for the help! Yeah, the interface is coming as soon as I finish paying off these monitors :p

What;s even better is a mixer that has control room outputs seperate from your main outputs. This way you can adjust your monitoring level while leaving your main output at the proper level for going back into a DAW or where ever . This is very useful when mixing "out of the box". I make sub mixes in the DAW and feed them to a mixer to get some analog summing. It is very usefull having the control room outputs for this.
