Winner chicken dinner!
Soooooo, is it okay to hook up external preamps through the TRS inputs on channels 3-8? I have been using external stuff through the line ins on channels 1+2 and through SPDIF, but I assumed that this was a no no on the other channels. I guess what my question boils down to is, do the TRS inputs on 3-8 still go through those PREAMPS?

It sucks not being able to use better pres for toms/room mics when i'm miking a full kit.

I would assume you can just plug it in and see, but each channel's preamp can be bypassed individualy

Bypassed individually how?

I really don't know the Firepod that much but to maybe answer your question, I'd say no. Your line inputs are line level not mic level so they aren't being mic amplified. You are not double mic level gain staging. As for line level gain stage this is where I'm not sure. I would think that the absolute best route would be output from your external mic preamp unbalanced 1/4" to your mixer's insert point to bypass the line-level gain stage all together for a completely unadulterated signal passage (plus eq though) . Someone correct me if I'm wrong. But then again the Firepod's channel's 3-8 don't have inserts right?

I do this...

All the time...Just patch the line level 1/4 inch into the combo jack. It will bypass the preamp on channels 3-8. Channels 1/2 are instrument/mic, so you will get the Firepod's preamp in the loop even with the 1/4 inch input. Set the trim with the gain knob for the channel, and you're fine. Just be sure to have enough gain from your external preamp dialed in (mistake I've made) so you get an adequate signal to the computer.
