right now im running a Tascam FW-1804. Which allows me to record 8 tracks simutaniously.... i was looking at the Presonus DIGIMAX FS and i figured id use the optical output on the back of the presonus to hook into my tascam so i could get 8 more tracks on the computer. The tascam has one optical in.

However, I looked at pictures of the back of the digimax and noticed that there is two optical outs .. one for channels 1-4 and another for 5-8.

Now i have a hard enough time just finding optical cables to begin with, but do they sell optical cables that are like Y cables... Two hookups on one end that conform to one ... and if they do would this work the way i want it to?

Thanks

The behringer ada8000 is way cheaper (under $200 if you play it right) and is one of the few good things they make. As long as you use the Tascam as your master clock you should have no problems. I have a MOTU 896hd and the ada8000 for 16 inputs. I actually prefer the behringer pres for drums. The MOTUs sound a little better on guitar and vocals though. It can serve as both ins or outs but not both simultaneously.

That's a no on the y cable thing.

Hey Nick,

The only time you have to use 2 ADAT cables for output is if you're wanting to record at 96K. If you record at 24 bit 44.1 or 48Khz, this is not an issue. At these lower sample rates the unit will carry 8 channels via one cable. Also, I own one of these and it is a nice unit. (and I'm using it just fine with one cable)

ohhhh ok cool thanks.. yeah i dont plan on the 96K

what do you think of the pres, id mostly use them for drums so i could free up everything else for guitars.

Oh and about the behringer piece... Ive been trying to eliminate the behringer name from my studio.. but you said you like the pres for drums?? tell me more about the produnt, im gonna go research it

oh yeah another thing too.. where do you guys buy your optical cables?

Hey Nick, take a look at the Octane as well. I find the pres really nice for drums.

the virtual world of music to me opens a lot more doors, such as the industry standard protools, whitch you can have like 128 tracks haha

The ADA8000 and ultraDI are the only two things that I like from behringer. If you want to turn your nose up at possibly the best ADAT preamp deal around then it's your loss. If you look around you will find tons of reviews from pro and home users that love it and swear by it. It's not the best but it's nothing to ignore.
