I have to prep a master tape for the mastering engineer tonight. It's the first project I've done on analog (outside of recordings I made in school, back in 1990). So I tore my house apart looking for my splicing block, and never found it. And of course, nobody in town carries them anymore.
Today, while on my break at work, I picked up a 1/4" router bit from the hardware store, found some scrap wood in our shop, and made my own splicing block. I scored the cut slot with a utility knife, and just kept scoring until it was deep enough for a blade to cut tape.
Not ideal, but certainly will be good enough for tonight. Here's a picture:
