hi guys. this is my first post here so please be gentle :)

im in the process now of trying to pick up some gear so my band can get some good quality recordings done in my basement. i've been doing a ton of research over the past couple of weeks, but im looking for opinions wether this should give me a "good" sound or not or if i should be looking in other directions.

currently we're using a cheap radio shack 4-track mixer going to the line-in on my computer soundcard and being recorded with sonar producer 4. the card can record at 24bit/96Khz (m-audio revolution 7.1) and the os is winxp. this setup works ok, but the quality of the recorded music is really tinny, no bottom end, etc. overall fidelity is really low. this is what im thinking of getting..

this mixer has the rca tape-out on it which im guessing would go to the line-in on my soundcard (with rca -> 1/8" adapter which i already have). would the rca out be the best quality connection going out, or would it be better to get a xlr adapter and output this to the pc instead?

we currently have a couple decent mics, but i was thinking of getting a drum mic package like below

anyone had any experience with these mics? im sure their not the best money can buy, but im more trying to get a good solution on the budget i have (about $1000 for everything)

bascially, just trying to get as many opinions as possible before i go start spending. rather ask the dumb questions now then end up with gear that im not happy with.

thanks! :)

What's going into the mixer?
What mics are you using now?
Do you have any preamps?

What is your budget?

What kind of music are you creating?

What are you using for an "audio editor"?

Could you give us a link to the soundcard you possess?

whats going in will be guitar, bass, drums and vocals. ive heard that recording from direct-out from the bass amp into the mixer yields pretty good results so im not worried about having to mic the bass amp. i've got a shure SM58 that i was going to use for the guitar amp (crate glx1200/peavey supreme 160 heads and peavey 5150 cab) ..im sure its not the best mic for the job, but it shouldnt be too bad.

the mics im using now besides the shure are just generic pos dynamic mics. a local store had them on for $20 each and at the time they suited our needs well, just having no condensors for the cymbals results in alot of "fuzz" when we record the cymbals/hi-hats. they have xlr connectors on them, but overall their not to bad. just wondering if that drum mic kit would be a good investment

im pretty sure the behringer mixer im after has pre-amps built it, will these suffice? my budget for all this is about $1000, so whatever i can get out of that the better. thanks for the reply

What is your budget?

about $1000

What kind of music are you creating?

a mixture of metal/punk. kind of a iron maiden/face to face/megadeth sound :)

What are you using for an "audio editor"?

i've been doing the tracks with sonar producer 4 and editing them with sound forge 6.0.

Could you give us a link to the soundcard you possess?

http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/Revolution71-main.html is the card im using.

i've read that the 57 and 58 are pretty much the same mic, except the 58 has the larger screen on it thus cutting out some highs. would it be the same thing if i just removed the screen during recording?

I just have always used SM-57s for miking cabs either in the studio or on stage. They seem to have a better response than the 58 at upclose range.
