first of all, i am a newbie to recording and found this forum and decided to ask for help..
and by newbie.. i mean i dont know anything!.

so.. i am trying to record a song yeah.. with guitars and all.. and i am going to buy a behringer xenyx 502 [just to check it out, will buy a better one later].. so.. if i get the cables and all and connect the mixer into a line in of a laptop [without a impressive soundcard] .. how will the sound quality be?.

i mean will it be really crappy or satisfactory?.
 
It will sound awful. I will depend what microphone you are using as well, but I can safely say it will be incredibly disapointing.

With the limited infomation you have given, i am tempted to say buy a USB/Firewire audio interface. These normally come with some of the software you need, which is the next problem you will have to solve.

If you want to record drums, you will need something different. Whats your budget?
 
recording drums is not a problem :D. but i cant record guitars.. and i am cool with anything below 200 since its just temporary..

i tried to buy a m-audio fast track usb.. but people have very different opinions about it. so i decided to drop it.

how'd the quality be if i get a behringer uca u202 [or something cant remeber well] usb interface and connect the mixer to it?
 
yep, that 1/8" input will make any masterpiece sound like a 100 year old broken vinyl.

the UCA202 will give you better results than your line input for sure. That would be a good way to start out, if you are only looking to do 1 track at a time.

I have the M-Audio Fast track.............quality.........not so great. I am hoping that the interface that comes with the xenyx series is better than my fast track.........Hopefully anyway....i have already bought the xenyx 1832
 
Also no one ever does this..........so if you want you can follow the link to my page. All of that was recorded with the M-audio fast track. and the M-Audio Producer usb mic.....combined with session software. Hope this helps.
