very interesting read. i'll have to look into this more.

the article said:
Originally developed in research to help the deaf, holophonic sound is set to be one of the major technological breakthroughs of the '80's that puts stereo, quad or any other conven -tional spatial effect very much in the kiddie's playpen division.
80's technology? I guess it never took off, because I've never really heard of it until now...

I would REALLY love to hear a sample of holophonic sound.

It's something really interesting, and it makes me sad that I hadn't heard of it till now either. Has the technique been used in any record? If not, I can't believe people haven't explored the field of holophony.

The article made it sound like a few people were interested in it (Peter Gabriel for one), but don't recall ever hearing that it had been done. Like I said, it was one of those things I'd never heard of until now. It seems to me that you'd need to have something like a 5.1 speaker system to be able to fully appreciate it anyhow, and those were not commercially available in the 80's...

i read that sony recently patented a form of this technology, and are researching it and marketing it as a "real life matrix" like the movie.
not just sound, but video, taste, etc.

Damn.

I wonder what type of driver creates the sound pressure. I would love to hear "help me obi wan your my only hope" in Holophonic sound.

I'd like to have a young thing whisper that in my ear!

really? you haven't heard anything about the new movie coming out? or the last two?
lol ;) :p

If they re-record all the sound effects in holophonic sound, we will have to buy the trilogy again...

I listened to the samples, and I really didn't think that much of it. I really think that many of the techniques used in making these recordings is already being used everyday. The reason then need surround sound nowadays, is because this Holophonic thing cannot be replicated without headphones. I bet I could find some album examples where there is stuff that is holophonic on them without it being called holophonic.

I would like a tv though that was holographic. Now that would be somthing. And brain implants so I don't need speakers to hear sound...

KNow him? Why, of course... he is me. At least he used to be.

I have forget...

I have forgot... you have to listen it in a good headphone!!! :D

anyone heard of holophony? definiton here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holophony
sounds better than dolby.
true 3d sound? better than stereo? I don't know... seems weird.

.. let me reanimate the old thread. There are two different topics, Holophony and Holophonics. Holophonics is related dummy head stereo. Really 3D audio, but needs to bear headphones.
Holophony is the physical copy of the spatial sonic field by loudspeakers, as describe in the Wikipedia link. More detailed is www.holophony.net. Should that be the future of audio?

Binaural Recordings

Also check/search for "Binaural Recordings". On youtube (but also google) you can find several samples of binaural video's where you can enjoy true 3D sound (imo better then 5.1 or 7.1....since the technique is based on a true copy of how we hear things ourself).

This week (15th of februari 2011) i bought a dummy display head for 18 euro's. It's a good dummy head since it's also covered with Latex (seems realistic to human skin). I also bought 2 separate Omnidirectional Electret microphones (inclused with 2 separate PreAmps 1.5V) for 59,58 euro's, and I bought cables to connect the microphones to my digital recorder (I bought a Roland R-05 for 199,99 1 week ago, truly a good piece equipment for the money, 24bit, powered with just 2x 1.5v AA batteries and it uses normal SD memory cards!).

Today i made the fist recording tests with the dummy head and the R-05 and it works great! I need to finetune settings ofcourse, but the full stereo effect is there already. I have to make/find 2 real shaped ears now in order to get an accurate recording. I also did put a Cap on the head so the sound reflection against the head is more accurate (instead of hair or a wig). So, for a price of 350,- euro's more or less i have a full system with head, mics, recorder, cables and memory card...not bad i think for the amazing Surround sound you get with just normal headphones.

I will post some links with samples if you want, just email me (also for questions) to fotografieforum@gmail.com :)

Lessee, over 30 years since it's creation, and we are still waiting for it to "puts stereo, quad or any other conven -tional spatial effect very much in the kiddie's playpen division." It could happen, I suppose, but obviously hasn't, yet.

I can see it coming into vogue in, say IMAX theatres- that's an entertainment where such bleeding-edge stuff is not only appreciated, but expected. It will probably spread, but it'll be quite a while before stereo is totally displaced. Hell, the large majority of AM radio is still MONO!

But I don't believe for a second that Sony has perfected anything like this for sight (video,) or the other senses. Yeah, sure they have...
