eyyy, that cool... excellent sound/mix/song.

Great job... nothing to add for me.

I like both the songs. I really like the vox effects on the first song. How was that done? The second song was a cool tune. It was nice and clear. Good stuff.

hey thanks man. If you're talking about the intro, it was actually very simple. I passed the intro vocals through Waves "Stomp" plug in and used the overdrive setting. Maxed the tone with zero drive to just get minimal coloring from the unit. :D

Nice job. I like it.

Was this all recorded live or with overdubs?

A bit of both actually. The basic tracks where done live. Drums, bass and basic rhythm guitars. Getting the timing right on the drums, we came back with a better bass, guitars and then some overdubs over the course of a month of so.

Thanks for compliment :)

Hollow Ride

The vocal compressed intro was/is intro/esting.
Some parts of this remind me of Garbage - I don't know why!
I like the drums - they sound like they are drums - real, esp the snare - it doesn't snap like a rubber band dipped in liquid nitrogen.
The bass sounds a little diffused during the guitar solo.
The only thing I don't like is the pronounciation on contro - as in con - trol. It sounds strangled & an affectation in the same way Twonty did with John Cougar Mellonhead's I Need A Lover.
The rest is ace Johnny!

Sounds great! The drums are killer! Love the mix. The harmonies sound a little Green Day-ish, which is good, very good. Bring up the dist guitars a little. Can give a lot of power to the song. Great job!

I'm not sure I really agree with the Foo Fighters comparison. If we must compare, I'd say it is more reminiscent of some British bands from the mid-late 90's, early 2000's... like Shed Seven, or to a lesser extent, Ash.

All that aside, very good job dude... sounds fantastic. Love the drum sound. For my continuing education, would you mind giving a brief summary of how you recorded the drums (i.e. number and type of mics, mic positioning, acoustic environment, and post-processing)? :D

Thumbs up, keep at it.

That's a really good pop song. Some people say that as a slam, but I think it's incredibly hard to write a good pop song. Fuck, if it was that easy, there would be more good pop songs.

I too get more of a Green Day vibe, although I think the British comparisons are probably more accurate.

Really nice work.

Very hooky...almost familiar, which is fine. Dammit, I'm going to figure out which Green Day song the chorus reminds me of....

Hey, it's rare that I bother to listen to homemade recordings more than once, because most of the time, the melody doesn't grab me. This one did.

Very much thanks to the comments guys...it's good to see hard work paying off.

I can see how the Foo Fighters reference is a bit off. I think because of how the drums came out, I had it stuck in my head that "oh, thats the foo fighters song".

Bad advertising on my part :D

Thanks. If you click on my signature link below, you can reference some of this stuff through the black and white pictures of my photo album. I tried to document what I did as best I could for this album.

The drums actually on this album where a bit of a multi level cake. I didn't actually use overheads during the live recordings for starters. I think that throws people off at first. The drums where built in 2 passes:

1st pass: I tracked kick, snare, and toms.

Compression, tube distortion and EQing helped me keep the hits rock solid all the way through. The tracks look somewhat "limited", but very organically. It was important not to make it sound limited.

Kick: summed up a beta 52 and SM91 to mono.
Snare Top: Double SM57 (parallel compression) setup summed to mono.
Snare Bot: Reamped to get more snare via an MXL V67 (good grit)
Snare Sample: triggered a "verb" snare via drumagog to thicken up the snare a bit.
Room mics: 2 DBX RTA reference mics 180 apart from each other at the other end of the room facing parallel to the drum set. So it's like quasi M/S setup. That's how I got the live room tone you hear in the songs.

Granted, I mix those levels differently according to the song and section of the song.

2nd Pass: Hi Hat, Ride and Overhead cymbal overdubs.

All of these where actually done with an SM57. Something about the softness of the 57 helped blend the overdubs into the kit right away. With some compression and EQ.

That was pretty much it. The drums are pretty raw and straight up from there. Compression, tone shaping, miking and EQ really go a long way and saves on CPU.

new tune...kind of like a "rough" piano rock

oh for sure. I dont really see pop as a slam, which I think is ok. I mean if a song appears a little polished, I mean thats just another aesthetic I think. Sometimes garage "dirty" is cool and sometimes "clean and tight" is good to.

Many words to live by :D

Totally groovy, Lee!
Though for a Foo Fighters type thing, the guitars could be a bit more aggressive. Sounds great as it is though. Great songwriting and performance!
