whats the best way to remove the hiss noise from the track u have recorded

Put the track into record with no signal going in!

Defenitly no hiss!

Sorry, had to say it:D

I can only answer this for Cool Edit (Pro), so you could get yourself a copy from it if noone comes with a better suggestion.

Use the hiss reduction, or even more precisely the noise reduction after getting a noise profile from a only-noisepart. Works great for me.

It depends a lot on the source of the hiss. If you're micing an amp it could be noise from the amp, eliminate this type of hiss with an EQ or possibly a low impedence mic. If it's in your recorder it can be filtered or minimized with the combination of EQ and noise reduction (sometimes)

i used the noise gate but u still hear the hiss noise in the song...i think its mostly from the way it was recorded from the get go..but i still should be able to remove the hiss noise...thanks for you all help

Try to keep the hiss out of your signal BEFORE it gets into your recorder. Look at your mic, cable and any other outboard gear that you are using. But if the hiss is still there, use a noise reduction tool. Cool Edit Pro 2.0 does good but if you just what the noise reduction plug in, then download it from www.sonicfoundry.com

:D
1. Use an EQ on playback to remove hiss, use the 16k pulled all the way down.
2. Use a DBX single end noise reduction unit.

The other suggestion are good, but
you are just putting a bandaid on it.
Unless the take was spectacular,
you should clean up the signal path
and re-record it.

You can't remove the hiss without
taking out some of the cool high frequencies
that you spend so much time and money
on mics, preamps, A/D convertors, etc.

I've used both the CoolEdit and Sonic Foundry
tools, and they work. I've also used the
tool that used to ship with EzCDcreator,
and it was no where near as useful.

transparent hiss removal is not
in the cards.

Since were on the removal subject....

First thing you try is gating it, but only if the hiss is audible on an entire mix. If the hiss is masked while your mixing it usually not a problem. Its god to look at the hiss to see how much bandwidth it contains. If its really complex and its loud enough to distract you then you might want to redo the track.
Was the hiss there when you recorded the track? Or is it in the playback chain?

If you absolutely have to remove the hiss and there are no other options available then CEP noise reduction is one of the best tools around, another option is a de-esser that allows modification of bands and Q. Once you choose this path, it will usually make the track a little dull. Depending on where the hiss is you can also silence the heads and tails of the track.

A Behringer Denoiser will do wonders if you use it right. I know they are scoffed at around here but for home reccers it is one very good tool. Cheap too.
