OMG A DRUM MACHINE WITH NEWLY ADDED HUMAN-LIKE BODY!

That drummer has NO feel whatsoever. Set him down with a 4/4 beat and an acoustic player and he'll start devouring his own feces.

Decent endurance. ;)
I've seen him play slow, he does a fine job. Playing slow wasn't the purpose for that excerpt of the video. The whole thing is an hour long and builds up to that.

You really aren't going to judge the extent of someones playing ability on one five minute speed drum solo, are you?

Two bass drums, toothpick sticks, and very poorly recorded with crap drums...yeah great...
what do you expect from a microphone in a camera?

Speaking of instructional videos... I recently had a chance to watch King Crimson's 1999 Vroom concert DVD, with Bill Bruford at the helm. The opening cut (Vroom, Vroom) allows the viewer to choose any one musician and receive a two-camera focused view of him, with his sound elevated above the band mix. Bruford had a camera to the side just above him, and one right in front. Wow. I had to watch his work half a dozen times--what a great way to study someone's technique in a full-group setting--before I zeroed in a few of the other guys (Fripp, Levin, etc.).

Anyone know if any other concert DVDs allow the viewer such a one-musician focus?

I wouldn't say he had no groove. It was definitely a "Death Metal" groove though. When playing that fast, the accents don't always make sense since they could slow the feeling of the song down. And I would guess that slowing down is the last thing on these musicians minds. Hehehe... Interesting how this fast playing creates a feeling of floating, or rather teedering on the edge. I thought the simultaneous snare and hi-hat strokes during some of the verses was interesting. I can imagine how difficult it must be to move - let alone relax - when your playing at that speed. He was cruising. Nothing wrong with it. This style of playing fits well with the music.

One thing I would recommend is to bring in one or two larger/heavier/darker crashes with slower decay. Also a deep/dark large china would really add to the darkness. They would give this song - and his playing style - some serious ooompf. There were a couple of times when he hit the china in a cool way, but the sound of the china was too delicate.

impressive muchos.

i liked it alot! really, not an animated guy at all...

actually, i think he would be worthless as anything except a studio drummer. theres no stage presence in his drumming. people like to see drummers sweating and throwing there arms around and really getting into it. he's kinda numb.

but still awesome.

I agree, but there is a time and a place for everything.

i can grind but i wanna know how they can keep the consistent volume of the snare up and the volume of the hats down when grinding cuz my snare always gets real quiet and my hats get too loud when i grind. my left kick pedal is quieter too.

Its natural for double pedal that when you go at higher speeds the volume decreases, the only way to get around that is to practise, search for jason bitner in youtube and you will see his 'lesson' he did on drummer world.
Its the same with the blasts, practise and practise and slowly, it comes.
