"High Time"

this is an acoustic guitar-based song....
recorded with a taylor 414, and combinations of a pair of condensers, AT4033 and ADK Hamburg, thru a pair of different mic pres, a ART DPS, and an A Designs Audio MP-1, dbx compression, vox are in the ADK, congas, maracas and shaker are in the AT4033.
bass is direct, via a sansamp bass di, split thru a mesa boogie guitar amp, also direct.

i did a demo on this, some time back....

i'm working on a final mix, towards a soon-to-be-released album. this was mastered only for level.

comments are welcome.

Cool song. Cool guitar parts. I thought the guitars sounded real good.

Little vocal synching issue at about 1:12 on the line "righteous gleam in their eyes". Things get a little off there.

I'd compress the lead guitar part a bit. Notes here and there get lost.

How about doubling the shaker and hard panning them? At least near the end when things are more stipped down. Just a thought.

triplem
thanks for listening

yeah, the vocals i didn't try to nail tight, i wanted a looser, more rock feel, to match the vibe of getting high and singing about it.

the lead is already compressed, but it's supposed to be light, and delicate, so a careful listen is mandatory.

cool idea about the shaker, i'll play around with that one.....
thanks again.

Interesting mix. My initial thoughts are highly subjective, but I'll throw em' at ya - see what ya think...

Recording acoustic guitars in a mono set-up has always been a troubling thing for me, when there aren't a lot of additional instruments. Being composed almost entirely of acoustic guitars, this recording was a bit too "2-d" for me. It sounds like this was recorded with two acoustic takes recorded mono and panned hard R/L.

I know it's a tough bargain, but if I were recording this, I'd record both guitar parts again, and put em' stereo (either Mid/Side, or distant pair), and then pan the stereo images 3/4 R/L. That should give the recording much more body, and give the acoustics a bit more depth.

I liked the vocals. I like the dual shakers idea, too.

Anyway... Not bad at all... The overall levels were pretty coherent.

Man, I've got nothing. This is just a great song, well performed and recorded. I would have to go back and look, but I think this is what I always say whenever you post up a new one.

Cool, thanks for sharing!!!

Ive been lurking around here for about a year now. This is a great place. I love this particular forum.
I am a retired bar musician. Played about 95% of every weekend since 1993 up until 3.5 years ago...BURNT OUT!!!! Cant even think about playing Sweet Home to another drunk!
Been trying to get into writing and home recording for the past 3.5 years. Discovered this place about a year ago or so. Like I said, I pop my head in here and try to have a listen a couple times a week.
I have found some really cool stuff by a few people here. Some stuff I stopped about 3 seconds into it. Ive listened to this track 3x now. This is cool!!!! Really cool.
I like it here to learn about the recording process, but I mainly like it to get inspiration from songs that do not sound like evrything else in the world...looking for something different yet something that doesent sound like your trying to be different... something that inspires me ....if that makes sense...this song....is cool!!! I like it!!!!
Thanks for the inspiration,
Klutzee

PoeticIntensity
thanks for listening!

the sound i have in my head, for this particular tune, involves a very controlled sound space....
i've been recording for a long time.....
i've done lots of stereo acoustic guitar recording, but that sound was definitely not what i wanted for this mix.
it's just one of those subjective judgement calls, in how i wanted this tune to translate.

the last acoustic tune i posted ("Trouble") was just the opposite, a lot more like what you're suggesting.....

i just gotta decide if i want to treat the acoustics with any more reverb.....
i've got left guitar with reverb panned right, and right the same with left.
it's light, but it's there, to spread the sound out.
thanks for the ideas on the stereo spread.....

hehe, being consistent, eh?!
well thanks for listening, glad you dig it.

glad you're inspired!
thanks for checking it out....

I think i still have a song of yours on my old snowboarding mp3 player?? Im sure I do

loved the percussion and guitar at the beginning....great vocals....bit on the hippy vibe but works well without sounding too dated, more blind melon than crosby stills nash and young :)

another nice one

I absolutely love this song dude.

I don't really have nothing else to say just thought I would say that I even downloaded this to play in the future.

Tell me how much I owe you. :D

The s*** smokes! (pun intended) This would have fried their brains at Woodstock man! Don't know about you, but I was barely born when the 60's left, but this song definitely has that vibe, if my ear's not trippin'. If Bob Dylan could sing, play guitar or had talent, he would like this song too (I know I just pissed off a few people with that:eek:) But seriously, I always like your songs man, they surprise me with the lyrics, phrasing and arrangements - they keep me guessing. You can see my stuff comin'..... so predictable.... cliched, etc.
Great guitar tone as usual - that's the only predictable piece.
:D

kcearl
