Flailing up a storm.
I am doing some recordings of a friend who has a fairly high pitched voice for a man (think kermit). He is a good singer (excellent tone and good dynamics IMO) and his voice tends to sound pretty good in a decent room, but is hard to flatter in recording so far.

Right now, I have three mics to work with, sm57, sm 58 and mxl 603s. Crappy pres, using a small behringer mixer for now. Any suggestions on getting the warmest tone as far as micing placement, eq, etc goes?

I am currently rereading through the stickied posts for ideas and basic knowledge, but anything specific to this vocal style would be good.

Right now I am intersted in learning the most with what i have, rather than to get the best possible recording at this point, so everything is practice in one manner or another. Eventually i will be working to improve the chain for higher quality, but for now, i want to learn enough about techinque to make that worth it.

Thanks.

Of the 3 mics you have, I think the SM57 is likely to yield the best results. Place it close to his mouth for proximity effect, turning it from straight on as needed to reduce plosives.

If he were in my studio, I'd use my AEA R44...

the right verb (make an aux send and then EQ the verb with some high shelving to make it pretty dark) can do wonders
