Hifi system for translation check isent working well

Hi, i've just 'stolen' my fathers denons hifi speakers for use in my studio to check my mixes. Anyway, im running them through a philips surround reciever in stereo mode (100w per channel. Speakers rated at 70w at 6ohms. The sound they are producing is lacking top end and the general quality sounds like a low grade mp3 but without the constant shimmer those mp3s have. He runs the speakers through a more powerful yamaha surround amp and they sound fine...i believe. Anyway, do you think a cheap amp is in order? Got any suggestions? Cheers

How does it sound when you run a reference CD through them?

equally poor. iv just checked them through my dads amps (the yamaha surround amp and it also sounds bad, but not as bad.
