Please read more carefully. I was just explaining someone else's comment. But the fact is the OP does fit the pattern of click seekers, which you might understand if you had been around this forum for more than a few minutes.

gawd...we don't want to come off as high and mighty, holier-than-thou, we know it all so HA! we are really, literally, a mom and pop group that has been making music for quite the while and want to do better, sound better, mix better...all the things that artists want to do...the group, in total, is Silent and myself, and we just want to make good music that people like, that touches them and makes a difference in their lives for a time...we'd love commentary, opinions, suggestions, and help....we're so not above the idea that we know what we're doing in every arena, so if any of you have something to share with us, please go ahead...we're learners, and as such, greatly welcome all the comments and suggestions so far...thank you to everyone who took the time to say something, we will really try to incorporate what you've said...Silent is more of the "music" guy, so he'll be doing most of the commentary there, but i just wanted to throw in my two cents here, just so that you can all get a feel for us...we're here to learn, share, grow...thanks again, all, for any time you take to give a listen and some opinions on our tracks...

the forum header invitation didn't say on PRE released track only..being around long enough to 'SEE' how it works around here..well in the little time I have been here being genuine and true, puts things into perspective, readjusting now.

I'm sorry if we mistook you for one, but your post looked just like those from drive by non-contributing click seekers.

The expectation here is that you post a preliminary mix, we listen and make suggestions, you post a revised mix and so on. The first reply to the thread stated it as plainly as possible.

understood..'The expectation ' was not obvious. ( for newcomer) we went on what was posted on the forum header.
and how we looked maybe can look also like how a genuine person can look too..so being the subject of a mistaken identity drive by virtual flogging for following the obvious posted rules..

Yep, sorry about the mistaken identity. I find with forums it's a good idea to spend a little time reading and getting to know the unwritten rules before posting. Pretty much like every other aspect of social life.

Don't worry, this will be over and forgotten pretty fast and we can all get back to the usual business of tearing apart each other's mixes. In other words, welcome to the forums.

The newbie has a point...
The header could include a narrower definition of what's considered good and bad taste to post here.

OP, the reason we react so bitchingly to things like youtube or bandcamp links in the clinic is that there is no way to tell if it's an already released product or not. Most people here either use Dropbox, have a "trash" soundcloud account or something else that they use for uploading mixes that are still being worked on.
This subforum is a unique niché on the internet where people come together to mix and give opinions on other mixes and nothing else. One of the last bastion's of the web that's not been raped by selfish self-promotion. We just want to keep it that way.

From all this we learned. We just need to leave the mixing to the one's who can mix, hire us some vocal coaches, stick to making music part of it.

That is not what was said. Step back and re-read. You've come here to get better, improve and this is a good place to do it. First time a put a tune on here, I was pretty hurt. I am still reluctant to post, cause these guys are going to give you an opinion. Some advice I take, some I don't, but every time I learn a little more (many of these guys hear stuff and would never hear). And they are not just slamming you. They are giving you "their" feedback.

Here is what you do, first, go back and revisit your mix, and consider what was said about the mix. Second, listen to the vocals, if you think they are ok, then move on, otherwise, try another take, WTH, right? Get better at recording so that the sound you want people to hear (forever) is the sound you want them to hear.

You are at the right place for improvement, but no one is here to beat you up (it will feel like it for along time), but many of the guys here know what they are doing, talking about and can assist in making your "sound" better. That is what you really want.

I listened to a couple of your YT songs. The songwriting is ok, the instruments could use some balancing.

Your main issue is the vocals.

The female vocals are out of tune, a lot, and almost consistently. They sound adlib and/or unrehearsed. I think if you want a quality product you need to fix that problem first as vocals are the main thing average people listen for. The lead vocals are passable but also need work.

The vocals are too far out of tune for any kind of auto tune to rescue them. I don't have a problem with using AT but with discretion and minor fixes only.

You seem to be hiding the vocals behind the instruments and adding reverb to compensate.

A producer/engineer can't fix the main problem - you just need to step back and look objectively at the vocals. If you cannot hear that they are out of tune, or you don't care I don't know what to recommend.

It sounds like you've put a bit of work into these songs and videos. If you are just having fun, that's fine, but if you want to have fun and get kudos, you need some work.

Some things help with singing -
stop smoking
buy a singing program that you use on a daily or at least regular basis for exercise and strengthening
warm up before you record or perform
memorize what you're going to sing before you sing it

I agree that you have some really good music here, but you must understand that the members here are about not bullshitting each other. Some may be opinionated by genre, but you take what is given as you desire.

thank you for the input, ido1957, it's much appreciated, as is everyone's commentary
and thank you for the welcome...as far as the toes we've stepped on, putting this on this particular thread, rest assured we won't make this particular faux pas again...

we will be taking everyone's comments and suggestions to heart, because as we hope is evident to everyone, we're not just doing this as a hobby, though it is something that we enjoy...as are quite a few of the elements of our tracks...

from everyone, and your, comments, we've already learned a few things that we will be attempting on our next tune, but some of the things, such as the "rawness" of the vocal performance, the reverb, and the overall feel of how we produce music, well...some things are simply one taste over another, no? preferring apple pie over chocolate mousse...but, a good vocal performance is a good performance no matter the flavor, and to point out what we might improve on, ways to go and things to work at, we do "get it", and appreciate the time it takes to listen to a track and form an opinion...

that said...balancing is a definite consideration as well, as are a more concerted effort on upping our vocal game, as it were...

thanks to everyone who's taken the time to comment here, we're really appreciative...we do have a very distinct "sound" that we try to go for, a signature that makes the music ours', but that's not to say that help and opinions, constructive input, is ever unwelcome...

If it's "released" then there's no point commenting really.
Are you going to unrelease it and try again?

Who gives a crap if it's released. The poster said he was looking for input and advice.
It's not like they are a signed band spamming the place.

Maybe this song cannot be "unreleased", but the next one can be better based on the input from other members.

It is common place for new members to try to take advantage of the site for just looking for hits on their music sites. They are usually deleted or moved to the 'Show Off Thread' before anyone even notices.

This does not seem to be this type of thing in any way. But, some members may see it that way at first read.

Right on guys!! I'm all for having it said how it needs to be said, we can take it, telling it like it is what Edd is all about , look out. ~Whispering~ (talk show radio was her thing) A lot more music coming down the road We are going to make the best of what was said.
The style on this track was raw and in no way polished , it was meant to be loose and care free , I do have to admit the vocals are covered in a wild verb flood and sinking without a clue of what was being said, I wish I could have found to post this before on the week we were mixing it. But eh..let it go, Thats times gone..We got to change gears to start making our next release here in the coming weeks , and a lot of what we took today will go into that. oh we'll be back..

listening again to your mix,the musicianship n recording is spot on,everything seems well defined, but that bloody verb is killing your clarity ...

there a lots of things in the mix you could easily fix yourself as your writing,most of the vocals are fine,but in some bits they sound like "test" tracks (throwaway takes,scratch tracks,whatever you wanna call em),put in to see if they`d work and not later re-recorded ... id loop (with a bar lead in) the "dodgey" parts (then punch in/out and do say 8 takes,edit together the best bits before reaching for autotune ... her voice is fine,quite nice actually


edit:- 8 takes may seem like a lot,but when writing parts the first few will be a tad dodgey,after say the 4th loop the eyes close,the artist starts to settle down getting into the groove,the later clips are usually the best (but defo listen to them all in context)

think your limiter/comp is helping to bring out the worst of the verb,id suggest using a much shorter decay time but with a longer predelay



imo its a case of a bad mix ruining what could be a great track ... looking forward to your first real mixing clinic post (the one where your posting the mix in progress)
